ALGIERS- A delegation representing the Rif National Party (PNR) embarked on a significant journey to New York, aiming to advocate for the aspirations of the Rifian people for independence from Moroccan rule within the United Nations. This endeavor marks the commencement of a symbolic and historical struggle for the liberation of the Rif, a region renowned for its enduring resistance against colonial powers. Throughout history, iconic figures have emerged to lead the fight against foreign occupations, epitomizing the unwavering determination to safeguard freedom.
During their visit, Jaber El-Ghadioui, leading the PNR delegation, shared a photograph proudly holding the Rifian flag, symbolizing the party’s steadfast commitment to the liberation of the Rifian people. Throughout their stay, the delegation members conducted a peaceful sit-in outside the main entrance of the UN headquarters, waving the Rifian flag prominently to attract international attention to their cause. This visit serves as a poignant milestone in the PNR’s tireless struggle for Rifian rights and its quest for international recognition.
In March of this year, leaders of the Rif National Party reiterated that their actions were solely political and disavowed any intention of resorting to armed conflict to achieve Rif independence. Speaking at a press conference in Algiers, the party’s founders emphasized that they had submitted a dossier to international institutions to advocate for the Rifian cause and petition for the separation of this northern Moroccan territory, annexed by the Alaouite dynasty with the aid of France.
The PNR has established a representative office in Algiers. Since its inception in Belgium in September 2023, the party, under the leadership of Jaber El-Ghadioui, had sought official recognition from Algeria. The party’s spokesperson called upon Algeria to welcome Rifians fleeing Morocco and commended Algeria’s support for the Sahrawi Republic.
During the inauguration of the PNR representation in Algiers, Jaber El-Ghadioui affirmed that his party aimed to effectively represent the Rifian people on the global stage. The opening of the PNR office in Algeria solidifies the political and diplomatic efforts initiated by the party to cultivate fraternal relations between the Rifian people and African, particularly North African, communities, to which they proudly belong. He underscored the importance of coordinating actions with these nations to enhance security, progress, and stability.
Jaber El-Ghadioui emphasized that the party’s office, as a commission of the Rif National Council, would endeavor to strengthen the historical ties between the Rifian and Algerian peoples, based on shared ideals and objectives. He concluded by expressing gratitude to Algeria, on behalf of Rifian people residing in Morocco and the diaspora, for its hospitality, which resonates with its reputation as a sanctuary for revolutionaries.
The founders and activists of the PNR draw inspiration from the legacy of Abdelkrim El-Khettabi, a heroic figure who led the resistance movement against France and Spain during the Rif War, commemorated by a street named after him in Algiers.
