Algiers, Algeria | December 19th, 2024 — From December 11 to December 17, 2024, Algeria’s People’s National Army (ANP) conducted a series of highly successful operations in the southern regions of the country, reinforcing its commitment to combating organized crime and terrorism. The operations, aimed at addressing a wide array of criminal activities, yielded significant results, underscoring the high level of professionalism and vigilance of Algeria’s armed forces.
Terrorist Surrender and Key Arrests
A noteworthy success during this period was the voluntary surrender of a wanted terrorist, Benkhia Kouali, also known as “Khouzaïm.” The terrorist, who had been operating in the region, turned himself in to the military authorities in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, located in the 6th Military Region. He was found in possession of a Kalashnikov assault rifle, ammunition, and other related materials. This surrender reflects the growing effectiveness of the ANP’s counterterrorism operations.
Moreover, nine other individuals identified as supporters of terrorist groups were arrested during separate operations across the country, further dismantling the terrorist networks operating within Algeria.
Combating Narcotics Trafficking
In line with Algeria’s ongoing battle against narcotrafficking, combined units of the ANP, in coordination with various security services, executed operations that led to the interception of 65 narcotraffickers. These efforts thwarted attempts to smuggle 134 kilograms of processed cannabis from neighboring Morocco into Algeria. Additionally, 1.7 kilograms of cocaine and 37,691 psychotropic pills were seized in other operations, highlighting the ANP’s robust approach to tackling drug trafficking.
Smuggling Crackdown and Border Control Successes
The ANP’s decisive actions were not confined to counterterrorism and drug interdiction. In the southern regions of Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, and In Guezzam, operations also targeted illegal smuggling activities. A total of 515 individuals were arrested, and a significant array of contraband was confiscated. Among the seizures were 56 vehicles, 344 generators, 200 jackhammers, and 8 metal detectors, alongside quantities of raw gold, explosives, detonating devices, and tools used for illicit gold mining activities.
In a related operation, the ANP intercepted 19 individuals involved in the smuggling of fuel, tobacco, and food products, arresting them and seizing 102,130 liters of fuel, 19 quintals of tobacco, and 28 tons of food supplies.
Efforts to Combat Illegal Immigration
The ANP also successfully thwarted illegal immigration attempts along Algeria’s coastal regions. The Coast Guard foiled multiple clandestine migration efforts, rescuing 88 individuals aboard makeshift vessels. In addition, 395 illegal immigrants of various nationalities were arrested across the country, highlighting the ANP’s ongoing vigilance in protecting national borders.
A Demonstration of Professionalism and Vigilance
These operations, executed with precision and coordination, reflect the ANP’s unwavering commitment to national security and the safety of Algerian citizens. The broad scope of the arrests and seizures underscores the diverse nature of organized crime and the military’s ability to respond to various threats simultaneously. With these efforts, the ANP continues to demonstrate its pivotal role in maintaining stability and security in Algeria, reinforcing its position as a key player in the global fight against organized crime and terrorism.
