Algiers, Algeria | October 28th, 2024 — Abdelmadjid Zaalani, President of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), received, on Sunday in Algiers, a delegation of Swedish activists advocating for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. These activists travel globally to raise awareness about the Sahrawi cause and rally support for their legitimate struggle.
According to a statement from the CNDH, Zaalani discussed the Council’s missions and its role in promoting and protecting human rights across Algeria. He highlighted the CNDH’s extensive presence throughout the country and its engagement with international human rights mechanisms.
Algeria’s Stance on Self-Determination
Zaalani emphasized that Algeria’s commitment to the Sahrawi cause is rooted in its firm and consistent positions articulated in various international forums. He underscored that these positions are inspired by Algeria’s November doctrine, which advocates for the right of all peoples to self-determination and sustainable development.
During the meeting, Zaalani praised the integrity of the judges at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for their ethical conduct and objectivity, particularly regarding their recent comprehensive ruling that bolsters the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
Expanding Awareness
The discussion also focused on strategies to broaden awareness of the Sahrawi cause through active people’s diplomacy. Zaalani called for coordinated, inclusive actions aimed at engaging all components of public opinion in various countries, especially parliaments, which serve as a voice for popular sovereignty.
This meeting signifies Algeria’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Sahrawi people’s quest for independence and highlights the importance of international solidarity in advancing human rights and self-determination movements.
