Algiers, August 30, 2023 – Algeria, a nation on the crossroads of Africa and the Mediterranean, remains steadfast in its pursuit of economic diversification and non-alignment in the global arena, as it forges ahead with strategic policies to protect its sovereignty and economic stability. Despite not securing immediate entry into the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group following its recent expansion, Algeria’s commitment to establishing itself as a pivotal player in the African and Mediterranean geopolitical spheres remains unwavering.

The recent non-accession to the BRICS bloc should not be misconstrued as a setback, but rather as a step along Algeria’s carefully charted course. President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in tandem with the strategic directives set forth by the state, is guiding Algeria’s diplomatic and economic endeavors towards Central Asia and Asia, paving the way for a promising future. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, reiterated the nation’s dedication to these principles during a press conference in Algiers, emphasizing that the BRICS outcome does not undermine Algeria’s capacity to defend its interests.

“In the face of the BRICS outcome, Algeria will resolutely continue to pursue its chosen path,” declared Attaf. The nation’ steadfast commitment to multipolarity in international relations and its adherence to core principles remain unshaken. Algeria’s diplomatic activities will extend beyond the BRICS, as it collaborates with allies in diverse international frameworks such as the UN Security Council, the Group of 77, and the Non-Aligned Movement.

According to Attaf, Algeria’s non-accession to the BRICS bloc is not a defeat, but rather a conscious choice. The nation possesses a range of diplomatic, political, strategic, and economic avenues through which it can advocate for its interests. Attaf’ statement underscores Algeria’s resolve to explore new diplomatic horizons, particularly its orientation towards Central Asia and Asia, while seeking to join institutions like the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Algeria’s ties with existing BRICS members remain solid. Attaf emphasized that these countries are viewed as friendly allies, reaffirming the spirit of collaboration that will persist despite the non-membership status. This outlook is a testament to Algeria’s commitment to fostering robust international partnerships.

The disappointment stemming from the BRICS decision has not derailed Algeria’s trajectory. The nation’s leadership remains determined to navigate the global landscape with pragmatic diplomacy, seeking a “new center of gravity” that has crystallized in Central Asia. Minister Attaf, in an interview with the Italian news agency Nova last June, had already articulated the nation’s strategic shift towards preserving and defending national interests in this evolving geopolitical context.

Finance Minister Laaziz Faïd echoed these sentiments in Johannesburg, reiterating the alignment between Algeria and the BRICS countries in terms of strategic vision and core principles. The convergence of perspectives signifies a shared commitment to global stability and prosperity.

While immediate BRICS membership may be deferred, Algeria’s resolute focus on domestic reforms, business environment enhancement, and industrial diversification continues unabated. The nation’s ambitions for pragmatic cooperation and eventual BRICS accession remain on the horizon.

As Algeria strides forward, its unswerving dedication to economic diversification and diplomatic equilibrium stands as a beacon of resilience, ensuring its prominence in the evolving global landscape.
