In a fervent display of unity and determination, activists hailing from the Rif region assembled in Brussels, Belgium, to passionately advocate for full independence from Morocco and the immediate release of detainees languishing under the Makhzen regime. They also condemned the refusal of the Makhzen to accept humanitarian aid offered by different countries following the earthquake that struck the nation. Led by the steadfast Youba al-Ghadioui, a prominent figure at the forefront of the struggle for Rif’s autonomy, the demonstrators passionately rallied for the departure of the last occupying Moroccan soldier from their homeland. With unyielding determination, they demanded the restoration of Rif’ sovereignty to its rightful people, free from any imposed conditions.

They declared that independence is near, and a new republic will soon secede from Morocco. The demonstrators shared exclusive videos with the Dzair Tube channel, documenting their peaceful and resolute protest.
Riffian Activists in Brussels Demonstrate Peacefully, Sending a Powerful Message
As they assembled in solidarity, they symbolically trampled on a picture of King Mohammed VI, emphasizing their demands for justice and recognition. The scene was a testament to the resilience of this marginalized community, as they sought to raise global awareness about their struggle for rights and autonomy. Despite the tension inherent in their message, the demonstration remained peaceful, showcasing the activists’ dedication to peaceful activism and their determination to effect meaningful change.
A Momentous Commemoration
On this significant occasion, professional Dzair Tube journalist Djamil Djerboua engaged in discussions with Moroccan activists. Mohand Al-Khalfaoui, a Riffian activist, stated, “We want to establish our rural state as our ancestors did in 1921, and we are here today to commemorate the 102nd anniversary of this occasion.” He added that they are committed to pursuing political avenues to achieve their goal and will make important decisions in the near future.
A Positive Momentum for Independence
Activist Ahmed Moulay expressed optimism about the ongoing developments, asserting that their demands for the independence of the Rif people from Morocco have gained momentum. He emphasized that today, September 18, marks Rif’s Independence Day, as they believe they are on the brink of achieving their long-cherished dream.
Morocco’s Refusal of Humanitarian Aid Criticized
Aziz Akorouali criticized Morocco’s refusal to accept aid directed to the Rif areas without providing any explanations to the people. He identified three reasons for this refusal. Firstly, he attributed it to the Makhzen regime’s indifference to the suffering of the Moroccan people, especially those in afflicted and impoverished regions. Secondly, he believed that Morocco feared exposing the dire conditions of its citizens, as accepting aid would bring international press attention. Lastly, he accused the regime of wanting monetary aid in dollars to further its own interests, rather than humanitarian supplies that would benefit the Moroccan people.
The Fragile State of Moroccan Infrastructure
Human rights activist Youba al-Ghadioui shed light on the underlying issues, stressing that Morocco’s rejection of aid is due to the fragility of the state’s infrastructure and its inability to provide decent living conditions. He noted that Morocco prioritizes areas with a tourism focus, neglecting the fragile regions inhabited by the poor and the deprived. He emphasized that the recent earthquake had exposed Morocco’s different reality, debunking the perception of it being a developed country.
In Brussels, the activists from the Rif region remain resolute in their pursuit of independence, justice, and accountability. Their voices resonate not only in the heart of Belgium but also around the world, as they strive to achieve their rightful place on the international stage and secure a better future for their homeland.
