Algiers, Algeria | August 27th, 2024 —  In an exclusive interview with Dzair Tube, Sudanese actor Rik Aby shares his thoughts on his breakthrough role in the Indian film The Goat Life, which has garnered significant attention since its release on Netflix. Aby reflects on the film’s success, controversies, and the potential for Algeria to emerge as a new hotspot for filmmakers.

Rik Aby, currently residing in the UAE, plays a central role as “Jasir” in The Goat Life, a film that has stirred both acclaim and debate since its debut on Netflix. The project, which spotlights stunning desert landscapes, has sparked widespread conversation, particularly in the Arab world. In his interview, Aby expressed his pride in being the first Arab-African actor to take on a leading role in such a major production, acknowledging the overwhelmingly positive feedback from audiences across the Middle East and beyond.

As a key actor in The Goat Life, what are your thoughts on the film’s remarkable success, especially within Arab countries?

I’m truly honored to be the first Arab-African actor to take on a significant role in a major project like The Goat Life. The overwhelming support I’ve received from the Arab world and beyond has been both humbling and uplifting. I’m deeply grateful to Almighty Allah for this opportunity, and it fills me with pride to see how well the film has resonated with audiences. The encouragement from my people and the broader community is something I treasure greatly.

Following its premiere on Netflix, The Goat Life has drawn mixed reactions, with some critics praising its artistry while others expressed concerns over its portrayal of Saudi Arabia. How do you respond to these criticisms?

As creators, our goal is to craft narratives that connect with people on a deep level. The fact that our film has sparked conversation and evoked such a broad range of reactions is something I consider a success. The Goat Life is based on a true story, and our sole intention was to present it as authentically as possible. At no point was there any intent to disrespect or criticize any nation or group. If certain aspects of the film caused offense, that was never our purpose. Our commitment was to the truth of the story, and we wanted to honor that above all else.

Can you share your thoughts on the filming experience in the Algerian desert, and might we see you visiting Algeria in the near future if officially invited?

Regrettably, I did not have the opportunity to film in Algeria, though I sincerely wished I could have been part of that experience. Algeria holds a special place in my heart—I have numerous Algerian friends and colleagues, and I’ve always been fascinated by the country’s rich history and vibrant culture. My fellow actors, Gokul and Blessy, who filmed in the Algerian desert, were absolutely mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of the landscape. They described the sand dunes as extraordinary, with undulating waves of sand that were both majestic and awe-inspiring.

Additionally, they spoke highly of the incredible hospitality extended to them by the Algerian people. It was difficult for me not to share in that experience, especially after seeing video footage from my talented Algerian filmmaker friend, Mesbah Fazaa’i. His work only deepened my desire to visit Algeria. I’m proud that The Goat Life will shine a spotlight on Algeria as a top destination for filmmakers, and I hope that we won’t be forgotten when these stunning locations become sought-after sites for directors worldwide.

Do you believe The Goat Life has the potential to position Algeria as a new epicenter for filmmakers and tourists alike?

Without a doubt! I’m convinced that The Goat Life has the power to bring global attention to Algeria’s incredible landscapes, particularly its mesmerizing desert regions. Algeria is a country brimming with natural beauty and cultural richness, and with the right exposure, I believe it will attract both filmmakers eager to capture its unique allure and tourists seeking extraordinary experiences. This film could very well open doors for Algeria to emerge as a prominent destination in the international film industry.

With the success of The Goat Life, how do you explain the immediate attachment and admiration from audiences, particularly in the Arab world? Are you pleased with this new audience?

I find myself at a loss for words to truly express my gratitude! As I mentioned earlier, as a storyteller, it is my duty to put in extra effort, especially when it comes to evoking empathy for complex characters and roles.

For instance, during a scene involving milk, which was my first day of shooting in 2019, I drank about half a liter of milk. Due to my lactose intolerance, this was quite detrimental to me, and I nearly lost consciousness. I had to leave the set, feeling like I had let everyone down on my very first day. Fortunately, a doctor administered an injection, and I regained my composure with renewed determination to prove my capabilities. I am deeply grateful to our director, Blaise, and our esteemed star, Prithviraj Sukumaran, for giving me a second chance, which allowed me to deliver my best performance.

Do you think The Goat Life has the potential to compete for major awards at international film festivals?

Yes, absolutely. Given that the film is currently trending globally, and considering the harmony and understanding within our team—under the direction of Blessy and the presence of our star Prithviraj Sukumaran, not to mention the dynamic duo behind the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire—the film’s music by the acclaimed A.R. Rahman and the sound design by the Oscar-winning Resul Pookutty, alongside the adaptation from the renowned novel The Days of the Goat by Benjamin, all contribute to its prestigious standing. With the support and enthusiasm from audiences worldwide, this could indeed pave the way for the film to achieve notable accolades.

Can a film like The Goat Life really influence relationships between India and Saudi Arabia?

If by influence you mean engaging and entertaining the audience through its artistic and human elements, then we certainly hope so. Humanity’s interconnectedness and our continuous need for mutual support ensure that our stories remain a vital part of our shared experience. I am deeply moved by the support and love we have received from around the world. This overwhelming response not only makes us proud but also reinforces our commitment and humility.

I have also learned that the film is being screened in Bahrain, and we hope it will reach other parts of the world soon. The journey of The Goat Life continues to be a source of great pride and joy for all involved.

Can you briefly outline your artistic journey and will we see you in Arab films in the future?

I have been an actor for over twenty-four years, and my career has spanned various significant projects. I participated in two Hollywood productions: The Misfits directed by Renny Harlin, featuring Pierce Brosnan, Nick Cannon, Tim Roth, and Jamie Chung, and Vision Central, a film set to be released soon where I had a notable appearance alongside the highly sought-after Hollywood comedian Matt Rife and rising star Towhsein Malafoura.

Additionally, I have acted in Indian films such as Saaho with Prabhas and Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga with Sunny Kaushal and Yami Gautam, directed by Ajay Singh. These films achieved top rankings on Netflix in India and worldwide. I hold the record as the only Sudanese actor residing in the UAE with thirteen cinematic credits to my name.

My television work includes prominent series like Boxing Girls across two seasons, We Were Yesterday with notable stars, such as Dr. Khalid Amin from Kuwait, and Al-Sanawno with Yasser Al-Azmeh in a central role. My most recent TV series is The Board, created and directed by Hozan Akko, featuring Syrian stars Basel Khayyat, Selim Haddad, Nadine Tahseen Beik, and Susanne Skaf.

I also have an upcoming Pakistani film titled Inspector Jamshed with director Fahad Bin Noor, where I play a supporting role. Furthermore, I am working on a project with Inorama Agency and Monles Media, and another in development focusing on the Sudanese diaspora in light of current events. I will share more details as they become available.

I have much more to discuss, but time is limited!

Thank you for your insights. It’s been a pleasure having this conversation with you.

The pleasure is entirely mine. I am truly honored and delighted by this opportunity.

A warm greeting to Algeria and its hospitable people.
