ALGIERS- In a dramatic turn of events, Algeria’s bid for membership in the BRICS group has sent shockwaves through the Makhzen regime, leaving it in a state of panic. Long notorious for its iron-fisted authoritarian governance, the Makhzen finds itself now resorting to a flurry of fabricated narratives, disseminating false information about Algeria’s purported rejection. These deceptive tactics bear witness to the Makhzen’s profound desperation to cling onto its waning authority. Yet, beneath the facade of deceit, lies a compelling truth that unravels an entirely different narrative—a narrative that poses a direct threat to the Makhzen’s prevailing hegemony.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, host of the upcoming BRICS summit, recently confirmed that the decision to admit new members would be based on consensus. Among the African candidates, which include Egypt and Ethiopia, Algeria has garnered significant support. President Ramaphosa revealed that numerous states, around 11 or 12, have expressed a keen interest in joining the BRICS, reflecting the urgency for African development and financing.

Given President Ramaphosa’s emphasis on consensus, it is highly likely that Algeria’s admission to the BRICS will be ratified at the forthcoming Johannesburg Summit. The country enjoys the backing of influential BRICS members, such as China and Russia. China, a global economic powerhouse, sees Algeria as a vital partner for its ambitious “New Silk Road” megaproject. Russia, a longstanding ally, has expressed support at the highest levels of government and diplomacy. Brazil, too, has shown support for Algeria’s candidacy, as evidenced by its parliament’s endorsement. Former Brazilian President Lula Da Silva is expected to reinforce this trend, aiming to strengthen economic ties between the two countries while seeking Algeria’s support for Brazil’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
India’s stance on Algeria’s BRICS membership remains undisclosed, but its refusal is unlikely to impede Algeria’s admission. President Tebboune, advocating for Algeria’ swift inclusion in the BRICS, emphasized that the year 2023 would mark Algeria’s integration into the group. He stressed the need for sustained efforts in investment, economic and human development, as well as increased export capacity.
It is worth noting that Algeria possesses a significant advantage in its debt-free economy, a favorable position compared to some existing BRICS members like Brazil and South Africa. Moreover, Algeria’s strategic importance extends beyond its valuable mineral resources, agricultural potential, and oil and gas reserves. The country’s regional influence, particularly in fostering stability within the Sahelo-Saharan region, holds great appeal for Russia, China, and South Africa.
As an active member of the African Union, the Arab League, the Islamic Conference, and OPEC+, Algeria is poised to assume the role of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council starting from January. This new status will enable Algeria to play a crucial role in shaping a multipolar and equitable global order.
Algeria possesses not only substantial financial resources but also an abundance of natural resources, making it a key player in economic development. Coupled with its advantageous geographical position and the government’s demonstrated political will, as exemplified by the new investment code, Algeria has a compelling case for joining the BRICS. This prospect, however, has drawn the ire of its adversaries, who persist in employing hostility and spreading falsehoods to undermine the progress of the Maghreb region and its inhabitants. Despite these challenges, Algeria’s strengths persistently advocate for its inclusion in the BRICS, bolstering its position and benefiting the region and its people.
Algeria’s potential admission to the BRICS represents a seismic shift in the global power landscape. The Makhzen’s attempts to spread disinformation and undermine Algeria’s candidacy only serve to highlight the regime’s fear of relinquishing its grip on power. With Algeria’s growing influence and its pivotal role in shaping regional and international dynamics, the world is taking notice, and the Makhzen’s tremors will reverberate far beyond its borders.
