Algiers, Algeria | July 26th, 2024 — In a recent tweet, the Moroccan opposition figure Adnane Filali has sharply criticized France’s stance on the Western Sahara conflict, suggesting that President Emmanuel Macron’s upcoming visit to Morocco in September may be influenced by political motivations that undermine Sahrawi rights and jeopardize Algeria-France relations. Filali highlighted that France’s support for Morocco’s plan regarding Western Sahara could be driven by a desire to cater to Moroccan interests, potentially at the expense of both Sahrawi rights and Algeria’s diplomatic ties with France.

Filali’s tweet mirrors a broader skepticism about France’s foreign policy and its potential effects on regional dynamics.

According to an official statement from the Algerian government, France is backing Morocco’s plan for Western Sahara. Is Macron preparing for his visit to Morocco in September by sidelining Sahrawi rights, including those of our own, and jeopardizing his relations with Algeria merely to satisfy King Mohammed VI’s ego? he tweeted.

Algeria, for its part, has issued a strong condemnation of France’s recent endorsement of the so-called Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. The Algerian government has labeled the French decision as “unexpected, untimely, and counterproductive,” expressing its intention to “draw all necessary consequences” from France’s position.

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally expressed profound regret and disapproval over France’s support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty. This endorsement, recently communicated to Algerian authorities, has been criticized for reflecting “dubious political calculations, morally questionable assumptions, and unsupported legal interpretations.”

According to the Algerian ministry, France’s support does not facilitate a peaceful resolution to the Western Sahara conflict but rather perpetuates a deadlock by endorsing Morocco’s long-standing autonomy plan, which has been in effect for over seventeen years. The ministry emphasized that the Western Sahara issue is widely recognized internationally as a matter of decolonization. France’s position, it argued, distorts this process by legitimizing a colonial fait accompli and supporting Morocco’s disputed sovereignty over the territory.

Algeria’s statement also criticized the timing of France’s decision, coming from a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The Algerian government contended that France’s stance deviates from the council’s decisions and international legal standards, which should ideally support the search for a resolution to the Western Sahara conflict.

The Algerian government further asserted that France’s decision undermines ongoing United Nations efforts to resolve the Western Sahara conflict, thereby impeding progress toward regional peace, stability, and security. In conclusion, Algeria has reaffirmed its commitment to holding France accountable for the consequences of its decision and its impact on the conflict.
