Algiers, Algeria | May 29, 2024 — Nadia Rabia, CEO of the Algerian Maritime Transport Group (GATMA), shed light on the maritime freight transport sector during a recent discussion, outlining a series of initiatives aimed at fortifying the fleet of vessels and expanding market presence.
During an interview on Radio Channel 3, Rabia disclosed plans for the acquisition of three large bulk carrier ships, each with capacities ranging from 55,000 to 60,000 tons. These acquisitions are slated to reinforce the fleet of Cnan El Djazair, the newly amalgamated entity comprising Cnan Nord and Cnan Med.
Rabia confirmed that the tender specifications for this acquisition have been formulated and greenlit by the Tender Commission. The procurement procedures for these vessels, facilitated by loans totaling approximately 20 billion DA from the National Investment Fund, are poised to kick off imminently.
Additionally, Rabia underscored that the Algerian Maritime Group has secured a budget of 5 billion DA for the refurbishment of immobilized vessels, alongside an additional 2 billion DA as working capital from the Ministry of Finance, facilitated through the General Directorate of the Treasury.
Expansion of Maritime Routes
As part of its strategic agenda, the maritime group is poised to extend its reach into West Africa. A new maritime freight transport line to Nouakchott (Mauritania) and Dakar (Senegal) is set to debut in June. Furthermore, plans are underway to inaugurate a maritime line to Poland, featuring a monthly export program of 10,000 tons of goods.
On a domestic scale, GATAM’s CEO announced plans for the establishment of a new floating dock and shipyard at the port of Arzew. This infrastructure will enable the Ship Repair Enterprise (Erenav) to engage in shipbuilding activities. Additionally, a novel maritime freight transport service along the Algerian coast is on the horizon, poised to benefit economic stakeholders.
By amplifying its fleet, introducing new maritime routes, and investing in infrastructure, the Algerian Maritime Transport Group aims to augment its capacity, efficiency, and service offerings within the maritime freight transport sector. These endeavors are poised to catalyze economic growth and development across the nation.
Algeria’s ENTMV Mobilizes Four Ships for Summer Crossings
The National Maritime Passenger Transport Company (ENTMV) has taken significant steps to enhance its summer service program, facilitating vacations in Algeria for citizens living abroad. Nadia Rabia announced the deployment of four maritime transport ships by ENTMV for the summer season. These vessels, including the “Badji Mokhtar,” “El Djazair II,” and “Tassili II,” along with a chartered vessel, boast substantial capacities to ensure the success of the season.
With a total of 325 planned crossings, the maritime routes connecting Algeria to France, Spain, and Italy are well-established. This comprehensive program includes 182 crossings between Algeria and France (Marseille and Sète ports), offering a capacity for 273,000 passengers and 80,000 vehicles. Additionally, 127 crossings between Algeria and Spain, accommodating 220,000 passengers and 55,000 vehicles, and 16 crossings between Algeria and Italy, with a capacity for 21,000 passengers and 5,000 vehicles, are scheduled.
To streamline ticket purchases, ENTMV has introduced a reservation platform for travelers’ convenience. Furthermore, the company’s 25 commercial agencies, both nationally and internationally, are equipped with electronic payment methods to facilitate transactions.
