ALGIERS- In a significant development for Algeria’s military capabilities, Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army (ANP), Saïd Chanegriha, recently conducted a visit to inspect two strategically important military industrial sites in the second military region of Oran.
The chief of staff first visited the Central Naval Base of Mers El Kébir, where he received a comprehensive briefing from the Director-General of the Naval Construction and Repair Establishment. The presentation covered the progress of ongoing projects, followed by an inspection of the naval construction chain, as well as units and naval buildings currently undergoing repairs by national economic enterprises.
During the visit, Chanegriha inaugurated and christened the latest tugboat manufactured at the Naval Construction and Repair Establishment, reinforcing the naval forces as part of the ANP’s fleet development and modernization program. The newly commissioned tugboat, named “El Bassil,” was praised by Chanegriha as a significant achievement.
In the concluding phase of his visit to the second military region, Chanegriha proceeded to the Aeronautical Construction Establishment in Oran. There, he inspected production lines and received detailed explanations from technicians and professionals regarding various prototypes, including the Safir-43 with four seats and Firnas142 with two seats. The chief of staff also toured repair workshops and other facilities, expressing satisfaction with the “considerable efforts” in aeronautical construction and repair.
The advancements in the military industry, spanning naval construction, aeronautics, and more, were acknowledged by the President of the Republic during the inauguration of the 31st edition of the Algerian Production Fair in December 2023.
Beyond naval and aeronautical production, the ANP has ventured into the automotive industry in recent years, producing trucks, trailers, semi-trailers, utility vehicles, multifunctional vehicles, buses, and personnel transport vehicles.
Objective: Contribution to the National Industrial Fabric
The Military Automotive Industry Development Establishment, a commercial entity under the ANP, oversees the design, development, production, marketing, and after-sales service warranty of its products. These are marketed under the “Mercedes-Benz” and the National Company of Industrial Vehicles (SNVI) brands. Notably, vehicle components are “locally manufactured,” with ongoing efforts to increase integration levels annually. The objective is to “contribute to the Algerian industrial fabric, reduce import costs, and generate employment,” according to a spokesperson for the establishment.
Simultaneously, the Mechanical Industry Development Complex, through its subsidiaries nationwide, manufactures various mechanical parts for public and private sectors. Its subsidiaries, including the Algerian Company for Manufacturing Special Vehicles Rheinmetall-Algeria, the Rouiba Foundry, the Tiaret Foundries, and the mechanical industry companies in Aïn Smara (Constantine) and Rouiba (Algiers), contribute significantly to the complex’s operations.
The Mechanical Industry Development Complex has obtained authorizations from German brands DeutzDaimler-MTU to produce engines locally. During the National Production Fair, the complex showcased its range of locally manufactured products, including engines and spare parts.
In summary, Algeria’s military industry is making substantial strides in diversifying and enhancing its capabilities, with a focus on self-sufficiency, local production, and technological advancements across various sectors.
