Salma Malika Haddadi’s Election as AU Commission Vice President Underscores Algeria’s Growing Influence

Algiers, Algeria | February 23rd, 2025 — The President of the Pan-African Parliament, Chief Fortune Charumbira, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Algeria following the election of Salma Malika Haddadi as Vice President of the African Union (AU) Commission. Her appointment took place during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Forum of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, recently convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for Algeria.

In an official statement released by the Algerian Council of the Nation on Sunday, it was disclosed that the Pan-African Parliament held an expanded Bureau meeting on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at its headquarters in Midrand, South Africa. The meeting brought together the Bureau, committee chairs, and geopolitical group leaders to deliberate on the legislative body’s work program, the agenda for the upcoming general session, and the proposed budget for the year 2025.

During his opening remarks, President Charumbira commended Algeria for its resounding success at the AU Summit, emphasizing the country’s rising stature within continental governance. He particularly lauded the election of Salma Malika Haddadi, recognizing it as a testament to Algeria’s unwavering commitment to African unity, institutional strengthening, and leadership within the AU framework.

Furthermore, Charumbira underscored Algeria’s instrumental role in mobilizing substantial material and financial support for the AU’s institutional mechanisms. He acknowledged the visionary leadership of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, whose diplomatic strategy has bolstered Algeria’s influence in regional and continental affairs.

The ongoing session of the Pan-African Parliament, held from February 18 to 28 in Midrand, South Africa, is convening under the 2025 AU theme: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.” This thematic focus underscores the African Union’s renewed commitment to historical justice, equality, and redress for past injustices suffered by African nations and their diaspora.

Algeria’s latest diplomatic victory, embodied in Haddadi’s election, reinforces the nation’s pivotal role in shaping Africa’s political and institutional landscape. This achievement further cements its standing as a key player in advancing the African Union’s vision of integration, self-reliance, and socio-political empowerment across the continent.
