AFRICOM Commander Hails Algeria’s Leadership in Regional Stability

Algiers, Algeria | January 22nd, 2025 — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received General Michael Langley, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), on Wednesday in Algiers. This meeting, held at the Presidential Palace, spotlighted Algeria’s pivotal role in fostering regional security and advancing shared goals of stability and prosperity across Africa.
The audience was attended by General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP) and Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense; Boualem Boualem, Director of Cabinet at the Presidency; and Boumediene Benattou, Presidential Advisor on Defense and Security Affairs.
General Langley, in his remarks following the meeting, praised Algeria’s influential position in Africa, stating, “Algeria is a leading nation in the region, and its leadership benefits all neighboring countries. The United States and Algeria will continue to thrive together while safeguarding the well-being of our peoples.”
The discussions covered a broad range of critical issues, including counterterrorism, peacekeeping, and enhanced military cooperation. President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to regional security, emphasizing its principles of sovereignty and non-interference. “Algeria remains dedicated to fostering peace and stability through collaborative efforts that respect international law and the autonomy of nations,” Tebboune declared.
General Langley highlighted the longstanding historical ties between the two nations, which are rooted in mutual respect and shared aspirations for stability and security. “Our partnership with Algeria is built on deep historical connections. Together, we address common interests, particularly in ensuring peace and stability,” he stated.
During the visit, General Langley and General Saïd Chanegriha signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reinforcing security cooperation. This agreement builds upon years of collaboration and outlines a framework for achieving shared security objectives. Langley remarked, “This MoU allows us to deepen our relationship further, paving the way for greater regional and international peace and security.”
The MoU also emphasizes the importance of technical training, intelligence sharing, and joint operations to combat transnational threats. The agreement aligns with AFRICOM’s recognition of Algeria as a key partner in addressing the challenges posed by terrorism and instability in the Sahel and broader African continent.
