ALGIERS- Recent developments have brought unfavorable news for the Makhzen vassals, as Al Jazeera has terminated the contract of Moroccan journalist Abdessamad Nasser. Known for his loyalty to the Makhzen regime, Nasser had been a part of Al Jazeera since 1997, one year after its inception by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Emir of Qatar.
The reasons behind his dismissal have not been disclosed by the Doha-based media outlet, but they are believed to be serious and well-founded.
Nasser’s controversial positions on the Western Sahara issue and his direct attacks against Algerian colleagues, including Hafid Deradji and Khadija Benguenna, have been a source of contention. The Moroccan government has also mobilized its diplomatic efforts to prevent this humiliating dismissal.
This incident is reminiscent of the recent BFMTV scandal, which resulted in the dismissal of another Moroccan journalist, Rachid Mbarki. Mbarki was found to have broadcast pro-Moroccan and anti-Russian reports, which were provided by the secretive Team Jorge. This team had manufactured hundreds of thousands of avatars, resorting to artificial intelligence, to parasitize elections in more than ten democratic countries.
It is possible that Nasser may have engaged in similar activities. These developments are a cause for concern for the Makhzen vassals, as they face a challenging time ahead.
