ALGIERS- After successful permanent exhibitions in Mauritania and Senegal last year, “Made in Algeria” is gradually making its way across the African continent with the upcoming opening of commercial counters in Côte d’Ivoire.
Speaking in Algiers yesterday, the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, highlighted Algeria’s ambitions in non-hydrocarbon exports, urging economic operators to get more involved in this new dynamic that characterizes the Algerian foreign market. “Following the success of permanent exhibitions launched last year in Mauritania and Senegal, we will soon open a permanent exhibition in Côte d’Ivoire, which will be followed by similar exhibitions in other African countries,” he stated. According to Mr. Zitouni, economic operators are called “to actively participate in these permanent exhibitions, which are intended to be promotion and distribution platforms available to exporters,” he emphasized.
Indeed, improving non-hydrocarbon exports is considered a key objective of the government’s policy for the coming years. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to both improve local production and deploy it on the international market to sell the surplus production. The minister recalled the various measures taken by his department and the government to boost exports.
After the revival of the special fund for the promotion of exports, an organization aimed at providing financial support to exporters in their promotional and placement activities on foreign markets, the minister indicates that the current year will be marked by updating the decrees related to this special fund in line with the expectations of exporters to encourage them to invest in foreign markets.
In addition to financial support for export activities, the 2024 Finance Law introduces an equally important new measure, which is the reduction of the VAT rate for products destined for export, a way to encourage economic actors to place their products on the foreign market. According to the Minister of Trade, 2024 will be devoted to translating commitments to exporters into action on the ground. “Certainly, measures have been taken to support export activity, but to succeed in this process and achieve the expected objectives, it is necessary to federate efforts through total involvement of the various actors,” he explained.
Thus, Mr. Zitouni believes that this year presents itself under better auspices to further raise the figure of non-hydrocarbon exports. “The will exists, the potential too,” and the challenge is to maintain the course while redoubling efforts, in collaboration with all concerned actors, to achieve the goal.
