Algiers, Algeria | December 12th, 2024 — In a bold step to fortify Algeria’s agricultural infrastructure, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Youcef Cherfa, announced on Monday during a visit to Boumerdes the government’s commitment to creating a national network of small- and medium-sized cold storage facilities. This initiative is a cornerstone in Algeria’s drive to enhance market regulation and agricultural productivity.
Speaking to the press, Minister Cherfa emphasized the “critical and urgent” need for this network, underlining its role in facilitating seamless product commercialization for producers and supporting the national strategy to mitigate market shortages. Key commodities such as potatoes, onions, garlic, and meats will benefit from this initiative, ensuring consistent availability and stabilizing prices for Algerian consumers.
Minister Cherfa commended President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent directive to national banks, urging them to provide robust financial support and simplified procedures for agricultural stakeholders to establish cold storage facilities. This initiative aligns with Algeria’s broader efforts to modernize and empower its agricultural sector.
Genetic Resource Bank and Local Seed Production
Highlighting Algeria’s strides in agricultural innovation, Minister Cherfa announced the nearing completion of a state-of-the-art gene bank, set for inauguration in the first half of 2025. This facility will play a pivotal role in preserving Algeria’s genetic resources and bolstering its agricultural research capabilities.
Furthermore, in collaboration with an international partner from a “friendly nation,” Algeria is preparing to launch a domestic vegetable seed production project. This strategic endeavor, aimed at reducing Algeria’s dependency on imported seeds, is expected to commence production by late 2025 or early 2026.
Proactive Measures for Ramadan and Agricultural Land Reform
In preparation for Ramadan, the ministry has initiated a proactive storage program to ensure the availability of essential commodities, including potatoes, onions, and garlic, in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce. This effort underscores the government’s dedication to meeting consumer needs during the holy month.
During a ceremonial event in Boumerdes, the minister distributed 57 agricultural concession deeds, highlighting the region’s exemplary progress in addressing agricultural land issues. Cherfa praised Boumerdes as a “national leader” in land regulation and a model for resolving disputes over haouchs (traditional rural properties).
Advancing Storage Capacity and Innovation
Minister Cherfa also laid the foundation for two regional cereal storage centers in the Si Mustapha commune, each with a 5,000-ton capacity. These facilities will significantly bolster Algeria’s grain storage capacity, ensuring food security. Additionally, a pilot nursery spanning 8,000 square meters was inaugurated in Zemmouri, showcasing Algeria’s commitment to agricultural research and innovation.
Marine Industry Milestone
At Corenav, a naval construction and maintenance company located in Zemmouri El Bahri port, the minister oversaw the delivery of three domestically manufactured boats. This milestone reflects Algeria’s progress in advancing its marine industry and supporting the fisheries sector.
Minister Cherfa’s initiatives signify a transformative moment for Algeria’s agricultural sector, aiming to establish resilience, sustainability, and independence. With these bold steps, Algeria is poised to strengthen its position as a leader in agricultural innovation and market stability.
