Algiers, Algeria | September 24th, 2024 — In a significant call to action for the agricultural sector, Youcef Cherfa, Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, urged stakeholders to rally their efforts to ensure the success of the upcoming agricultural season. During a national meeting held in Algiers on Tuesday, Cherfa announced the ambitious goal of cultivating nearly 3.7 million hectares as part of the 2024-2025 sowing campaign, set to commence on October 1st.

Addressing directors of agricultural services from all 58 wilayas, leaders of agricultural cooperatives, representatives from technical institutes within the sector, and various other involved parties, Cherfa expressed optimism about the upcoming season, stating that “all conditions are in place for the launch of a new agricultural season based on solid foundations.” He underscored the Ministry’s objective of producing 1.645 million tonnes of durum wheat, aligned with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has committed to achieving self-sufficiency in durum wheat production by 2025, thereby eliminating the need for imports.

Strategic Goals for Barley Production

Cherfa further detailed plans for barley cultivation, indicating that 1.17 million hectares would be dedicated to this essential crop. He reiterated the government’s commitment to establishing a robust local barley production system that meets national demands, with a goal of ceasing imports by 2026. This dual focus on wheat and barley reflects a broader strategy aimed at bolstering Algeria’s agricultural autonomy and ensuring food security.

The Minister highlighted favorable weather conditions, specifically the substantial rainfall recorded across the nation, as a positive precursor to the sowing campaign. He affirmed that these conditions facilitate the timely initiation of land preparation, with the aim of completing the sowing phase by the end of October.

Roadmap for Success: Collaborative Approach

The primary objective of this gathering was to finalize a collaborative roadmap involving local agricultural services and sector partners to guarantee the success of the agricultural season. Cherfa disclosed that local agricultural services have committed to cultivating 3.69 million hectares this season, supported by the availability of 4.2 million tonnes of locally produced and CNCC-certified seeds. For the first time, the distribution of seeds will be tailored to the specific needs of each wilaya and the unique characteristics of their agricultural lands.

Emphasizing the importance of preparedness, Cherfa instructed sector officials to ensure the timely availability of seeds and fertilizers ahead of the sowing campaign. He stressed the necessity of monitoring agricultural inputs and adhering to established technical protocols to maximize productivity and efficiency.

Workshops Addressing Key Agricultural Concerns

The meeting was further enriched by the establishment of four workshops focused on critical aspects of the sowing campaign, including financing, agricultural insurance, seed distribution, fertilizer application, and irrigation techniques. These workshops are expected to generate actionable recommendations that will serve as a collaborative roadmap for the 2024-2025 agricultural season.
