FM Attaf Addresses Diplomatic Tensions, Summons Malian Ambassador to Algeria

ALGIERS- In response to recent developments in Mali, Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Community Abroad, summoned Mahamane Amadou Maiga, the Ambassador of the Republic of Mali to Algeria, on Thursday, December 21, 2023. A statement from the ministry clarified that the meeting aimed to address the diplomatic tensions arising from the situation in Mali.
During the meeting, Minister Attaf emphatically reiterated Algeria’s historical commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in Mali, grounded in three cardinal principles. First and foremost, Algeria underscores its unwavering commitment to the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national unity of Mali. The minister highlighted the profound conviction that a peaceful path, excluding any other, is the only way to guarantee enduring and irreversible peace, security, and stability for Mali.
In conclusion, Minister Attaf emphasized the importance of national reconciliation, advocating that Mali should embark on a shared endeavor led by all its citizens, without discrimination or exclusion, to ensure sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity ultimately.
The minister referenced Algeria’s goodwill in its relations with neighboring countries, pointing to the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 13. This document called on all Malian parties to renew their commitment to the implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement arising from the Algiers process, addressing the legitimate aspirations of all components of the Malian people for lasting peace and stability.
Minister Attaf informed the Malian Ambassador that recent meetings with the leaders of the signatory movements of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement align with the spirit and content of this statement. He expressed hope that the Malian government, in line with its commitment to the accord, would join Algeria’s ongoing efforts to give it renewed momentum.
The minister underscored Algeria’s historical and multifaceted relations with Mali, expressing the obligation to undertake every effort to help Mali choose the path of peace and reconciliation, the true guarantors of its security, development, and prosperity. He affirmed that Algeria, in its role as the President of the Follow-up Committee of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali stemming from the Algiers process, envisions and embraces this responsibility with the same spirit.
