Algiers- Algeria, May 7, 2024 – Algeria has emerged as the world’s second-largest exporter of clinker after Vietnam, with exports reaching over $438.84 million in 2023. This represents a substantial increase from $60 million in 2019, highlighting the sector’s rapid growth and its significant contribution to Algeria’s exports outside of hydrocarbons. According to recent data disclosed by Tayeb Zitouni, the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Algeria has become a major supplier globally, with France emerging as the top customer, importing over $172.78 million worth of clinker, followed by Italy with $113.03 million and Belgium with $89.43 million.
In line with a new policy aimed at aligning national production with environmental standards, the Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion underscores the shift towards “green cement” production. This shift not only aims to avoid new customs duties, particularly in the European market, which imposes stricter conditions on environmental standards but also to reduce carbon emissions. Zitouni emphasized the potential of green cement to cut carbon emissions by 40 to 50%.
Furthermore, data from the Ministry of Trade indicates that Algeria’s cement production reached 39 million tons in 2022, produced by 18 factories across several provinces. This level of local production significantly surpasses the domestic market demand, which is estimated at 21 million tons.
In addition to the growth in clinker exports, Algeria has shown improvement in the export of construction products, positioning itself as the third-largest exporter of construction materials in Africa. The Minister of Trade and Export Promotion highlighted that Algerian exports in this sector exceed $680 million, indicating the sector’s growing importance in the country’s non-hydrocarbon exports. This emphasizes the need to sustain the current production levels to maintain Algeria’s position in the global construction materials market.
