Algiers, September 5, 2023 – Recent speculations about alterations to Air Algérie’s baggage policy have stirred confusion and concern among passengers, especially Algerians living abroad. Contradictory reports emerged on August 30, suggesting a potential shift in baggage allowances, including limiting checked luggage to one 23-kg bag. However, Air Algérie has firmly denied these claims, assuring passengers that there have been no official changes to the baggage policy.
The confusion began when an electronic media outlet attributed statements to an unnamed spokesperson for Air Algérie, indicating that the airline was contemplating aligning its baggage allowances with international standards. This alleged change would reduce the maximum weight of checked baggage from 32 kg (spread across 1-2 bags) to a single 23 kg bag. Additionally, it was claimed that cabin baggage allowances had already been restricted to a single piece weighing 10 kg several weeks prior.
The supposed rationale behind the rumored policy change was based on commercial and security considerations. The initial article suggested that concerns raised by handlers at international airports regarding the weight of Air Algérie’s checked baggage prompted these measures. Excessive baggage weight not only poses logistical challenges but also results in added fuel costs.
Furthermore, the article mentioned that the proposed changes were set to take effect at the end of October, and tickets already issued for travel during the upcoming winter season had already factored in these potential modifications.
When approached for clarification by Algerie aujourdhui, Amine Andaloussi, the official spokesperson for Air Algérie, vehemently refuted the reported changes. In a phone conversation, Andaloussi emphasized that the airline had not made any official announcements regarding revisions to the baggage policy, at least as of now.
