Algiers, January 24, 2024 – Air Algérie, the national airline of Algeria, is set to achieve significant milestones as it embarks on a trajectory of growth, with plans to expand its fleet and destination network. During a presentation to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People’s Assembly, Air Algérie’s CEO, Yacine Benslimane, provided details on these strategic initiatives.
Fleet Expansion
In the short term, Air Algérie has opted for aircraft chartering to meet the increasing demand, with six additional aircraft to be chartered for the upcoming summer season. Furthermore, the airline is expecting the delivery of the first aircraft purchased from Airbus and Boeing in 2025. This includes five Airbus wide-body aircraft, followed by two more in 2026. Additionally, eight medium-range aircraft from Boeing will be received in 2027. Alongside these acquisitions, Air Algérie plans to lease 10 aircraft starting from the first quarter of 2025. By 2027, the airline aims to have a fleet of 81 aircraft.
Destination Network Expansion
Air Algérie is positioning itself as a key player in the international aviation market by transforming Algiers Airport into an international hub. To support this strategy, the airline will launch three new routes to Africa in the summer of 2024. The destinations include Abuja (Nigeria), Libreville (Gabon), and N’Djamena (Chad). The airline plans to operate 516 international flights per week during the summer of 2024, with discussions ongoing for the launch of the long-anticipated Algiers–New York route and a route to London Gatwick.
Commercial Initiatives
In addition to network expansion, Air Algérie is set to continue its commercial offensive. The CEO announced discounts of up to 50% on fares, especially on routes popular among the Algerian diaspora. The airline is actively working on agreements for seven new routes expected to launch in the last quarter of 2024.
Covid-19 Ticket Refunds
Benslimane provided an update on ticket refunds for flights impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Air Algérie has reimbursed 213,000 tickets, totaling DZD 2.54 billion, demonstrating the airline’s commitment to passenger satisfaction and financial transparency.
