ALGIERS- The Minister of Transport, Mohamed El Habib Zahana, revealed on Saturday that the sector allocated a budget of 10 billion Algerian dinars (DZD) in 2023 to enhance safety and security at airports and improve services provided to travelers.
Speaking at the opening of the national meeting on air transport, the minister explained that this investment was part of the implementation of projects aimed at making Algeria “an international transit hub and a link between African countries and the world, by raising the level of airport security to international standards.”
Providing further details on these projects, the minister explained that they include equipping all airports with thermal camera surveillance systems and modern scanners compliant with international standards, especially in detecting explosives.
Zahana specified that these systems will be acquired through national and international tender processes.
The minister also mentioned the reinforcement and digitization of video surveillance systems at many airports, as well as rehabilitation works such as external walls, surveillance patrol circuits within the airport premises, fire extinguishing systems, and others.
Additionally, Zahana discussed the expansion of certain airport structures to keep pace with the rapid development in the field of air transport.
Improving the Quality of Services for Travelers
Zahana emphasized the need to “improve the quality of services provided to citizens at airports.”
In this regard, the minister stated that he had observed “several shortcomings in the operation and management of certain facilities” during field visits to airports, including “limited coordination between airport management structures, airlines, and other stakeholders at airports.”
Over 15 Million Passengers in 2023
On another note, Zahana informed that the 36 airports open to public air navigation in the country recorded nearly 15.4 million passengers in 2023, including 6.7 million on the domestic network and 8.6 million on the international network, surpassing the pre-coronavirus pandemic level of 14.3 million passengers in 2019.
The minister specified that Algiers airport alone recorded a traffic of eight (8) million passengers, including 5.6 million on the international network.
12 Airports Mobilized for Future Pilgrims’ Transportation
The minister also mentioned the mobilization of 12 airports across the country for the transportation of future pilgrims to the holy sites of Islam to perform the rituals of Hajj.
He stressed that preparations are underway to welcome visitors and tourists during the upcoming summer season.
