Algiers, Algeria | May 23, 2024 — On Wednesday, Algeria, along with fifteen other countries from Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America, launched a Joint Declaration of Commitments for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). This initiative aims to inject new momentum into the funding of the UN agency.
This Joint Declaration seeks to reaffirm the central and crucial role of UNRWA amidst systematic and unjust attempts by occupying authorities to undermine its efforts. The population in the Gaza Strip, more than ever, requires humanitarian aid. Besides Algeria, the countries that have joined this Declaration include Jordan, Kuwait, Slovenia, Belgium, Brazil, Guyana, Indonesia, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, South Africa, Spain, and the State of Palestine. The Declaration acknowledges the essential and indispensable role that UNRWA has played over its 75 years of existence, contributing to regional stability while supporting Palestinian refugees.
The document emphasizes the importance of supporting UNRWA to effectively carry out its mandate across all areas of its operations. The Declaration remains open for other countries to join and highlights that UNRWA is the cornerstone of the humanitarian response in Gaza, with no other organization capable of replacing it with the same efficiency. It expresses deep gratitude to the UN Secretary-General and the UNRWA Commissioner-General for their dedication to the agency’s mandate and mission, in line with relevant UN resolutions and humanitarian principles, including neutrality.
The initiative highly values the work of UNRWA staff in all aspects of their activities, confirming its role as a pillar of regional stability and a humanitarian lifeline for millions of Palestinian refugees, including children and women. It acknowledges the severe humanitarian, political, and security risks that could arise from any interruption or suspension of UNRWA’s vital work. The document also highlights concerns about the agency’s extremely critical financial situation and recognizes the efforts of donors and host countries to address the financial crisis, stressing the importance of providing sufficient and sustainable financial support to UNRWA.
This Declaration is a clear global response to the genocidal policies pursued by the Zionist occupying authorities, including the Prime Minister and the Defense Minister of the Zionist entity, against whom the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants. These authorities have killed, starved, and besieged Palestinians in the Gaza Strip while orchestrating a smear campaign against the only agency capable of providing humanitarian aid to Gaza. Their objective is to deprive the agency of the financial assistance necessary to aid the population in the Palestinian enclave. It is evident that the main goal of the successive attacks by the occupiers against UNRWA is to eliminate the refugee issue and the right of return, which remains a significant concern for the occupying authorities.
Previously, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced a financial contribution of $15 million from Algeria to UNRWA. This aid is intended to help the agency fulfill its role and respond to the calls for help from the Gaza Strip’s population during these challenging times.
