ALGIERS- The Security Council approved the US-Japanese resolution number 2722, demanding an immediate halt to attacks from Yemen against ships crossing the Red Sea.

Eleven countries voted in favor of the resolution, while four countries abstained from voting: Algeria, China, Russia, and Mozambique.

Algeria’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, expressed regret for not considering two important elements in the resolution, emphasizing that these elements are of concern to Algeria.

He stated, “Firstly, we believe that military intervention in the region, especially in Yemen, must be handled with the utmost caution, as such intervention could pose risks to compromising previous efforts by the United Nations, particularly by the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg.”

The spokesperson emphasized that recent negotiations between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have raised much hope in the region regarding the possibility of resolving the conflict in Yemen.

Regarding the second element that concerns Algeria, Bendjama explained that the Algerian delegation worked with the authors of the resolution to ensure that the Council, when examining the issue of maritime security in the Red Sea, does not overlook the clear link that everyone sees between Houthi attacks on merchant ships and what has been happening in Gaza for the past three months.

He insisted on the Security Council not ignoring the sentiments aroused in the Arab and Muslim world due to indiscriminate bombings against innocent civilians.

He added, “We preferred to abstain from voting because we cannot be bound to a text that ignores the 23,000 people who have lost their lives in the last three months in Gaza.”

On the other hand, the leader of the Houthi forces in Yemen, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, reacted to the United Nations resolution on navigation security in the Red Sea, describing it as “political maneuvering.”

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi stated that the United States is the one violating international law.

He affirmed that the actions of the Yemeni armed forces are within the framework of legitimate defense, and any action against them will receive a response.

Houthi forces have been conducting an intense campaign against ships heading towards the Zionist entity in support of Palestinian resistance.

Yesterday, Wednesday, Ansar Allah supporters, the Houthis, announced that they carried out a military operation with a “large” number of ballistic missiles and drones targeting an American ship in the Red Sea, noting that it “provided support to the criminal entity.”
