Algiers, October 17, 2023 – Algeria’s dependence on insulin pen imports has officially come to an end, marking a significant milestone in the country’s quest for self-reliance in the pharmaceutical sector. This remarkable achievement is attributed to the Novo Nordisk factory in Boufarik, Blida, which has dramatically increased its production capacity. The announcement was made on Monday by Malika Dergha, the General Director of the factory, during a visit by the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Lokke Rasmussen.

Dergha highlighted the factory’s remarkable progress, stating that it now has the capacity to produce over 55 million insulin pens annually. Furthermore, she emphasized that the factory is poised to meet 99% of the national market’s insulin pen needs by the next year, with plans to explore export opportunities in African and European markets.

Minister Rasmussen expressed his admiration for the successful Algerian-Danish partnership that led to the creation of the insulin pen assembly plant in Boufarik, which commenced operations in January 2023. He commended the high standard of the factory’s products, which adhere to international quality norms.

The Danish diplomat emphasized his country’s interest in expanding the partnership with Algeria across various sectors, particularly pharmaceutical industries and renewable energies. Rasmussen stated, “The success of the Novo Nordisk factory in Boufarik encourages us to explore new collaborations in other fields.”

Highlighting the sectors of interest for Denmark, the Minister cited pharmaceutical industries, given Denmark’s expertise in this domain. He also recognized the potential for collaboration in agri-food industries and renewable energies, areas where Algeria’ strategic geographical position provides ample opportunities.

Minister Rasmussen’s visit to Algeria is part of his participation in the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of African-Nordic Countries, scheduled to take place in Algiers. This visit not only strengthens diplomatic ties between the two nations but also underscores the tangible achievements of their partnership.

Algeria’s move toward self-sufficiency in the production of insulin pens is a significant step forward in enhancing the country’s healthcare infrastructure and reducing dependence on foreign imports, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic growth and sustainability.
