Algiers, Algeria | December 19th, 2024 — In a significant cultural development, Algeria continues its efforts to preserve its rich heritage by advancing the recognition of its traditional cultural practices. On December 18, 2024, the Ministry of Culture held a press conference where it revealed its ongoing efforts to place the unique Zellige tile art on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. The announcement came on the heels of the successful inclusion of the “Traditional Women’s Celebratory Dress of Eastern Algeria” on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

During the conference, Professor Souleimane Hachi, Director of the National Center for Prehistoric, Anthropological, and Historical Research, emphasized Algeria’s commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural identity. He shared that the Zellige, an ancient art form known for its intricate patterns and vibrant colors, is currently under study by UNESCO experts. This initiative is part of Algeria’s broader strategy to protect intangible cultural heritage, a mission the country has championed since becoming one of the first signatories of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Zellige is more than just decorative art. It represents a profound historical tradition passed down through generations, embodying the soul of Algeria’s cultural identity. This vibrant mosaic of craftsmanship tells the story of the country’s artistic heritage and is a testament to the country’s centuries-old artisanal mastery.

In line with its cultural preservation goals, Algeria already boasts 11 notable sites recognized by UNESCO as part of its World Heritage list. These include:

  1. The Casbah of Algiers
  2. The archaeological site of Tipasa
  3. The old city of Constantine
  4. The archaeological site of Timgad
  5. The M’Zab Valley
  6. The old city of Ghardaïa
  7. Tassili n’Ajjer
  8. The Ahaggar National Park
  9. The rock engravings of Tassili n’Ajjer
  10. The Djurdjura National Park
  11. The ksour of Ouargla and the M’Zab

Algeria’s proactive role in the global effort to safeguard and celebrate cultural heritage underscores its deep connection to preserving the uniqueness of its diverse traditions. The Zellige art form, with its intricate craftsmanship and rich history, is set to become a further symbol of Algeria’s cultural pride and legacy on the world stage.
