Algiers, Algeria | September 26th, 2024 — Algeria has called for intensified efforts to initiate a comprehensive and constructive negotiation process aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. This appeal was made by the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, during a United Nations Security Council session on Tuesday, addressing the “maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine.”
Minister Attaf emphasized that the envisioned process must lead to a political and peaceful resolution of the conflict, while adhering to the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international legality, which govern relations between member states. “A sustainable solution can only be achieved if negotiations address the root causes of the conflict and pay due attention to the security concerns of both parties,” Attaf remarked, stressing that such an approach would ensure long-lasting peace.
Attaf also referenced the initiative proposed by Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who had offered to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. He highlighted that Algeria’s offer stems from the nation’s exceptional relationships with both countries and its commitment to facilitating dialogue towards a peaceful resolution.
In his speech, the foreign minister lamented the absence of collective international initiatives and the inefficacy of diplomatic efforts that prioritize dialogue, despite the devastating consequences of the ongoing war. He reaffirmed Algeria’s belief that the international community still has the potential to halt the conflict, provided that the right diplomatic environment is established, allowing for the successful implementation of a mutually acceptable agreement between the warring parties.
Algeria’s stance reflects its broader commitment to multilateral diplomacy and peacebuilding, as the nation continues to advocate for constructive engagement and conflict resolution on the global stage.
