Algeria Advocates for Sahrawi Self-Determination in Meeting with UN Envoy Staffan De Mistura

Algiers, Algeria | October 2nd, 2024 — Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a bilateral meeting with Staffan De Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara. The discussions focused on revitalizing the political process aimed at reaching a solution that ensures the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in anticipation of the Security Council’s review of the Sahrawi issue scheduled for this October, as stated in a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad.

Four Key Principles for Resolving the Western Sahara Issue

During the meeting, Attaf emphasized to De Mistura Algeria’s perspective, rooted in its legal status as an observer in the decolonization process concerning Western Sahara. He articulated that any serious initiative for resolving the Sahrawi question must adhere to four fundamental principles.

The first principle underscored that “the issue of Western Sahara is a matter of decolonization,” in accordance with the United Nations’ doctrine. The second principle stated that, “as a matter of decolonization, its resolution is contingent upon the Sahrawi people’s exercise of their right to self-determination.”

Furthermore, the third principle asserted that “the autonomy plan promoted by Morocco cannot serve as a solution to the Western Sahara issue as it contradicts the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.” Lastly, the fourth principle concluded that “the conflict in Western Sahara can only be resolved through direct negotiations between the two parties involved in the conflict, namely the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front,” the communiqué noted.

This meeting underscores Algeria’s ongoing commitment to advocating for the Sahrawi people’s rights and its active role in the international dialogue regarding decolonization and self-determination in Western Sahara.
