Algiers, Algeria | June 28th, 2024 — The Algerian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, announced on Thursday that Algeria is on track to achieve self-sufficiency in durum wheat by 2027. This milestone is part of the National Plan for the Development of Strategic Crops.

During a field visit to Tindouf, accompanied by the Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal, Minister Cherfa disclosed that the ministry will commence the construction of 30 grain storage silos next week. These silos, with a combined capacity of 30 million quintals, are integral to the national strategy to attain total self-sufficiency in durum wheat within the next three years.

Significance of the New Investment Law

Minister Cherfa emphasized the crucial role of the new investment law, which aims to foster partnerships with foreign enterprises. These collaborations will enable Algeria to leverage international expertise and advanced technologies to enhance productivity in strategic crop cultivation.

Transforming Pilot Farms

The minister also highlighted the imperative of converting pilot farms into production units, in alignment with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s program. Notably, around 3,000 hectares of argan trees are slated for planting this season, positioning Algeria as a future producer of argan oil.

Agricultural Achievements in the South

Minister Cherfa lauded the agricultural achievements in the current fiscal year, particularly in southern regions like Adrar, Timimoune, Illizi, Ghardaïa, and El Ménea. These successes have prompted an expansion of cereal cultivation areas to approximately 500,000 hectares, ensuring a strategic reserve in the Saharan zones.

General Agricultural Census (RGA)

The minister noted that the General Agricultural Census (RGA), which will continue until July 17, has reached a 61% completion rate. This indicates strong participation from farmers and livestock breeders, aiming to assess the nation’s agricultural development capabilities and inform future program planning.

Inauguration of New Projects in Tindouf

During the visit, Minister Cherfa laid the foundation stone for a new local grain storage complex with a 5,000-ton capacity in Tindouf. He also initiated the electrification of 199 agricultural operations in the Oued el Mahia area (23 km from the wilaya’s capital). This project, with a budget of 40 million DZD, is expected to be completed within 45 days.

Visits to Agricultural Exhibitions and Production Complexes

The ministerial delegation toured various pavilions at a local agricultural products fair and inspected an integrated complex for the production of white meat and eggs, which meets 60% of the wilaya’s needs. Minister Cherfa underscored the importance of supporting and encouraging such investments.

In conclusion, Algeria’s strategic focus on enhancing its agricultural sector, bolstered by infrastructural developments and supportive legislation, is set to pave the way for self-sufficiency in critical food commodities and contribute significantly to the nation’s economic resilience.
