Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — The longstanding and multifaceted relations between Algeria and Slovenia were once again highlighted during the official visit of Urška Klakočar Zupančič, President of the Slovenian National Assembly, to Algeria. In a meeting with Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly (APN), both leaders underscored the deep-rooted ties and evolving cooperation between the two nations, with particular emphasis on the pivotal role Algeria plays in Slovenia’s energy security.

Boughali lauded the historical relationship, recalling the supportive stance of the former Yugoslavia, of which Slovenia was part, during Algeria’s liberation struggle. He remarked that the partnership has entered a “new phase,” especially after the Slovenian Prime Minister’s May 2024 visit, which resulted in the signing of significant cooperation agreements. Algeria’s strategic importance, especially as Slovenia’s primary supplier of natural gas, was a focal point of the discussions. This energy partnership is essential to Slovenia’s economy and strengthens the broader economic relationship between the nations.

Urška Klakočar Zupančič, in turn, expressed Slovenia’s appreciation for Algeria’s contributions and extended congratulations to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on his re-election. She emphasized Algeria’s role as an “important partner,” highlighting that the relationship should extend beyond energy into other sectors such as technology, trade, and education, fostering a more comprehensive bilateral collaboration.

On the global stage, the two leaders expressed shared positions on key international issues. Both urged the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions to establish an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, calling on the international community to fulfill its obligations toward a fair political solution. They also reiterated their strong support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

Regarding Western Sahara, Algeria and Slovenia reaffirmed their backing of the UN-led political process aimed at reaching a just and durable solution. Both nations emphasized the importance of upholding the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in line with relevant UN resolutions.

This visit further strengthened the bilateral relationship between Algeria and Slovenia, underscoring their shared values and commitment to peace, stability, and expanded economic cooperation across a range of sectors.
