ALGIERS- In a significant move to broaden its international engagements, Algeria has officially submitted a request for membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Friendship and Cooperation Treaty. The announcement was made during a meeting between Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, and his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Algeria and Indonesia.
“The ASEAN is the bloc with which Algeria seeks to build strong relations, in line with the new orientation that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has given to the country’s foreign policy,” explained the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its statement, highlighting that “Algeria has officially applied for membership in the ASEAN Friendship and Cooperation Treaty.”

Algeria and Indonesia Celebrate 60 Years of Diplomatic Ties, Pledge to Strengthen Bilateral Relations
Both officials celebrated the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between their nations. The ministers expressed mutual satisfaction with the existing bilateral ties and affirmed their commitment to injecting a fresh dynamism into this longstanding relationship.
Minister Attaf, emphasizing the common historical legacy of “deep-rooted fraternity, mutual trust, and ancestral solidarity,” highlighted Indonesia’s significant support for the Algerian Revolution. The minister expressed Algeria’s readiness to collaboratively breathe new life into these historic relations, particularly in economic, political, and social dimensions.
Minister Attaf and Minister Marsudi Unveil New Avenues for Cooperation
The discussions resulted in the signing of two legal texts related to diplomatic cooperation, notably the waiver of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and service passports. Additionally, the ministers formalized cooperation in the energy and mining sectors.
Concrete measures to invigorate relations were agreed upon, including the activation of bilateral cooperation mechanisms through the scheduling of the second session of the Algerian-Indonesian Joint Commission and the fourth session of the Political Consultations Commission. Both nations aim to update and enrich the legal framework, aligning it with their shared aspirations for mutually beneficial bilateral relations.
Minister Attaf revealed that ongoing bilateral negotiations cover 13 legal texts spanning various domains such as agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure, veterinary health, youth and sports, higher education, and scientific research.
To promote direct investments and boost bilateral trade, the ministers stressed the importance of establishing a joint business council and intensifying economic events showcasing cooperation, partnership, and investment opportunities.
The commitment to preserving and deepening the privileged nature of political relations between Algeria and Indonesia was underscored. This involves official visits at all levels, strengthened bilateral consultation and coordination in various international organizations, including the UN, Non-Aligned Movement, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), G77+China, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Algeria has officially submitted a request to join the ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Marsudi expressed her satisfaction with the current state of relations and affirmed the commitment of both countries to strengthen and promote ties in areas of common interest. Indonesia signaled its willingness to enhance investments in Algeria.
Regarding developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, both ministers emphasized the need to continue and intensify efforts to hold the UN Security Council accountable for protecting the Palestinian people. They called for accountability for Zionist occupation crimes in Gaza and expediting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state to resolve the conflict.
Minister Marsudi acknowledged the convergence of positions between Algeria and Indonesia in condemning Zionist aggression against Palestine, opposing the colonization campaign in the occupied Palestinian territories, and advocating for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid entry. She expressed confidence that Algeria, during its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council starting January 1, 2024, “will spare no effort to defend the Palestinian cause.”

Emphasizing the strong political relations already in place, Mrs. Retno Marsudi expressed her dedication to reinforcing economic collaboration. “We are working to strengthen our bilateral relations, particularly in the economic domain. I informed President Tebboune that our political relations are already very strong, and it is incumbent upon us to reinforce our economic cooperation, including trade exchanges and energy collaboration, to elevate the level of our bilateral relations,” said the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting, attended by Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, and the Acting Director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic, Mr. Boualem Boualem, reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to fostering stronger ties and collaboration across various fields.
