ALGIERS- Algeria and Iran have solidified their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation through the signing of five memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering various areas of collaboration. The signing ceremony, presided over by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raïssi, underscores the historic and strategic partnership between the two nations.
The MoUs encompass a wide range of sectors, highlighting the depth and breadth of the relationship between Algeria and Iran. Among the agreements signed are those focused on cooperation in the oil and gas sector, economic knowledge and technology exchange, tourism and cultural heritage preservation, information sharing, and sports collaboration for the period of 2024-2025.
The signing ceremony marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to bolster ties between Algeria and Iran, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to elevating cooperation to match the political will of their respective countries. President Tebboune emphasized the historical significance of the bilateral relations, describing them as deeply rooted and historic.
In addition to the economic and cultural agreements, discussions between President Tebboune and President Raïssi also touched upon regional and international issues of mutual concern. President Tebboune praised Iran’s support for Algeria’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and highlighted the alignment of both countries’ positions on critical issues, such as the Palestinian cause and the situation in the Sahel and Western Sahara.
Regarding the situation in Palestine, the President of the Republic commended “the Iranian leadership’s stance supporting the Palestinian people and rejecting Zionist aggression, amidst the regrettable silence of certain nations.”
Iranian President Raïssi Commends Algerian Efforts in Support of Palestine
For his part, the Iranian President, Mr. Ebrahim Raïssi, expressed appreciation for Algeria’s endeavors under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in backing the Palestinian people and advocating for peace in the region.
In a joint press statement with President Tebboune, President Raïssi lauded President Tebboune’s positions and actions at the United Nations Security Council and the International Court of Justice in support of the Palestinian cause, as well as his efforts towards regional peace.
Highlighting “the alignment of views between the two countries regarding support for oppressed peoples, notably the Palestinian people,” President Raïssi lamented the relationships some Muslim nations maintain with the Zionist entity, which, he stated, “deliberately perpetrates war crimes in the Gaza Strip.”
President Ebrahim Raïssi paid tribute to “the resilience of the Palestinian people in the face of the Zionist entity’s crimes.”
Stressing the “deep-rooted” bilateral relations, the Iranian President emphasized the significance of “expanding economic ties by engaging youth in both nations.”
President Ebrahim Raïssi took the opportunity to congratulate President Tebboune on the successful organization of the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), held in Algiers on Saturday.
Meetings between Presidents Tebboune and Raïsi Expanded to Include Delegations of Both Countries
The discussions between President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raïssi, on Sunday at the Presidential Palace, were broadened to include members of the delegations from both countries.
President Raïssi, who commenced an official visit to Algeria on Sunday, visited the Martyrs’ Memorial (Algiers) where he laid a wreath of flowers and observed a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of the glorious National Liberation War.
President Raïssi’s official visit to Algeria following his participation in the 7th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Summit further underscores the importance both nations place on strengthening cooperation and solidarity within regional and international frameworks. The GECF Summit, attended by leaders from various gas-producing countries, provided a platform for dialogue and collaboration on global energy issues.
As Algeria and Iran forge ahead with their multifaceted cooperation agenda, the signing of the MoUs signals a renewed commitment to deepening ties and exploring new avenues for partnership and collaboration across diverse sectors. The agreements pave the way for mutually beneficial exchanges and initiatives that will contribute to the socio-economic development and cultural enrichment of both nations.
