Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — Algeria and Slovenia have made notable advances in deepening their cooperation in the energy and mining sectors during the official visit of Urška Klakočar Zupančič, President of the Slovenian National Assembly, to Algeria. The high-level discussions, held on Saturday in Algiers and led by Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, focused on expanding bilateral relations in these critical industries. Both parties emphasized their shared commitment to reinforcing ties, particularly in the areas of natural gas, renewable energy, and mining.

According to a statement by the Algerian Ministry of Energy, the meeting was attended by key officials, including the Slovenian ambassador to Algeria and the Vice-President of the Algerian National People’s Assembly, Monder Bouden. The talks reaffirmed the “excellent” state of current partnerships and sought new avenues for collaboration, particularly in natural resource development.

Strengthening Energy Cooperation: Sonatrach-Geoplin Synergy

A key focus of the discussions was the growing partnership between Algeria’s state-owned oil and gas giant, Sonatrach, and Slovenia’s Geoplin. Building on the landmark gas agreement signed in May, Arkab and Klakočar Zupančič underscored the positive momentum in their energy relations, particularly in natural gas trade. Both sides acknowledged the strategic importance of the deal and expressed optimism about future collaborations in the energy sector.

Discussions also explored broader opportunities for cooperation between Algerian and Slovenian companies in hydrocarbons, with a focus on expanding trade relations and joint ventures. Algeria remains keen to secure long-term gas supply agreements with Slovenia and deepen collaborative efforts in oil and gas exploration, further strengthening commercial ties in the energy market.

Exploring New Frontiers in Mining and Renewable Energy

In addition to energy cooperation, the talks highlighted renewed interest in mining partnerships, with Algeria presenting vast untapped resources ripe for exploration. Both nations discussed investment opportunities in geological research and mineral resource extraction, supported by Algeria’s new investment law that offers favorable terms to foreign companies. Slovenia expressed interest in bringing its expertise in mineral processing and infrastructure development to these ventures.

Renewable energy also featured prominently in the discussions. Both sides showed keen interest in advancing projects such as the “SoutH2 Corridor,” an ambitious green hydrogen initiative aimed at establishing a sustainable hydrogen supply chain between North Africa and Europe. Algeria emphasized its growing capabilities in solar and wind energy, while Slovenia offered its advancements in hydrogen technologies, with both countries recognizing the importance of diversifying their energy sources and accelerating the transition to cleaner energy.

Expanding Cooperation in Water Desalination and Nuclear Technology

The scope of cooperation extended beyond traditional energy and mining sectors to include strategic areas such as water desalination and nuclear technology. Algeria expressed interest in Slovenia’s advanced water management systems, seeking to enhance its desalination infrastructure to address growing water demand. Discussions also touched on smart electrical grid systems and the potential for joint projects in optimizing energy distribution.

Another crucial area of collaboration is in nuclear medical applications. Slovenia, with its established expertise in nuclear research and healthcare technologies, expressed readiness to share its knowledge with Algeria. This partnership aims to advance Algeria’s healthcare sector by leveraging nuclear technology for medical purposes, underscoring the broader impact of this bilateral engagement.

Deepening Historic Ties and Expanding Strategic Horizons

In her statements, Urška Klakočar Zupančič praised the long-standing historical relations between Algeria and Slovenia, affirming Slovenia’s commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership. She expressed optimism for expanding cooperation beyond the energy and mining sectors, exploring new opportunities for collaboration in technology, healthcare, and renewable energy.
