Algiers, Algeria | October 20th, 2024 — Mohamed Ali Nafti, Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, reaffirmed the robust fraternal ties between Tunisia and Algeria, highlighting the unwavering commitment of both nations to maintain security and stability within the region.

In a meeting held with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday, Nafti conveyed warm greetings from Tunisian President Kais Saied, along with heartfelt congratulations on Tebboune’s recent re-election. The minister expressed profound gratitude for Algeria’s steadfast support throughout their shared history, emphasizing a future rooted in mutual benefit and the safeguarding of regional security.

“On behalf of President Kais Saied, I extend his congratulations to President Tebboune on his re-election, wishing him every success. I also shared the hopes of the Tunisian people for Algeria’s ongoing progress and prosperity,” Nafti stated after the meeting at the presidential palace in Algiers. He further underscored the historical connections between the two nations, forged during their collective struggles for independence, which have since evolved into a relationship characterized by profound solidarity and strategic collaboration.

Nafti’s visit was marked by bilateral discussions with Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf. These talks, which Nafti deemed “fruitful and essential,” encompassed a wide range of pressing issues, including the enhancement of bilateral relations, the acceleration of joint development projects, and the forthcoming tripartite summit involving Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, set to take place in Tripoli.

Minister Attaf emphasized the exemplary nature of Algerian-Tunisian relations, deeply rooted in shared values of fraternity, solidarity, and mutual support. “Our nations have historically stood together, united by our common history and a resolute commitment to preserving our shared heritage for future generations. Today, our partnership flourishes, marked by unprecedented levels of cooperation and strategic alignment,” Attaf remarked.

Both ministers focused on the implementation of agreements established during the 23rd session of the Algerian-Tunisian Joint High Commission, held in Algiers in October 2023. Significant attention was devoted to advancing key sectors, particularly the development of border regions, strengthening economic ties, expanding trade, and initiating joint projects in critical areas such as energy, food security, water security, and transportation.

The impending tripartite summit in Libya was also a focal point of their discussions. Attaf highlighted the significance of reinforcing cooperation with Libya, stating that “the summit aims to deepen trilateral collaboration and address the urgent issues faced by Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.” Both sides reaffirmed their dedication to supporting Libya’s recovery and the organization of free, transparent elections aimed at restoring peace and unity within the country.

Nafti commended Algeria’s principled stance on regional matters, particularly its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. He reiterated that both Algeria and Tunisia remain steadfast in their joint commitment to upholding Palestine’s right to establish an independent and sovereign state. “Our nations will persist in defending the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, and we stand united in our call for a just, lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue,” Nafti asserted.

The dialogue also encompassed the current situation in the Sahel region, where both ministers explored strategies to bolster security and stability through coordinated efforts. They concurred on the necessity to align their positions ahead of upcoming African Union (AU) meetings, particularly in tackling security challenges and fostering sustainable development across the continent.

In his concluding remarks, Nafti emphasized the deep historical significance of the Algerian-Tunisian relationship. “The bond between our nations, forged through shared struggles, remains the bedrock of our partnership. This relationship, built on mutual sacrifices, is poised to flourish in the years ahead. As we confront new challenges together, our collective resolve to enhance security and prosperity for our peoples is more robust than ever.”
