ALGIERS- The evolving geopolitical landscape has positioned Algeria at the forefront of the international gas equation, both as a reliable and secure supplier and as an undisputed leader within the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
Algeria finds itself uniquely situated to act as a unifying force within the cartel, while also fostering constructive relations with consumer nations, particularly Western countries, to ensure sustained market stability.
While diplomatic relations between Algeria and member states are generally positive, gas-related issues have historically been sensitive topics with some states. However, shifting geopolitical dynamics necessitate alignment with Algeria’s approach, which has demonstrated reliability in stabilizing both the market and prices.
On one hand, Russia and Iran continue to grapple with Western sanctions, while Qatar and Saudi Arabia contend with the consequences of Middle Eastern conflicts, disrupting tanker traffic and impacting global gas supply. Therefore, Algeria’s role in resolving the energy equation is pivotal. Establishing a strong foundation for international gas market stability depends on its ability to persuade GECF members to align their perspectives, prioritizing the collective interests of member countries.
As experts have emphasized in recent weeks, the goal is not to align gas prices with oil prices but rather to synchronize the positions of producing nations to form a stronger bloc than the OPEC+ alliance, which has effectively responded to oil market fluctuations and reinforced fundamentals. Achieving this objective requires prioritizing the common interests of member countries, ensuring the sustainability of gas and elevating its status as a key fuel in the global energy transition.
This entails countering anti-fossil fuel lobbies seeking to diminish gas’s role on the global stage and resisting consumer nations’ attempts to deregulate the market through price caps, actions that directly infringe upon the sovereignty of producing countries over their subterranean resources.
Market stability, price sustainability, and durability are therefore paramount concerns for both producing and consuming nations. The upcoming summit in Algiers occurs within a unique context, providing an opportunity to strengthen the foundations of the gas cartel, enabling it to fully assume its role as a syndicate of nations in the international energy market.
