Algeria Awarded Compliance Prize by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean

Algiers, Algeria | November 10th, 2024 — Algeria has been honored with the Compliance Prize by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), an entity under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This accolade, presented at the conclusion of the 47th annual GFCM session in Rome, which took place from November 4 to 8, celebrates Algeria’s proactive efforts in addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing—a pervasive issue threatening marine ecosystems globally.

Algeria’s commitment to revising national legislation targeting IUU fishing activities and implementing the regional action plan to mitigate these illegal practices earned it this recognition, alongside the European Union and five other nations. This award underscores Algeria’s strides in aligning with GFCM’s binding recommendations aimed at fostering sustainable fisheries and aquaculture within the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.

The GFCM session brought together representatives from 20 countries and the EU to strategize for enhanced sustainability in fisheries and aquaculture. During the meeting, the commission adopted 17 significant measures, including 12 binding recommendations focused on sustainable practices, the establishment of new protected fishing zones, and the formation of a network to monitor aquatic diseases in response to the challenges posed by global trade.
