Fourth Livestock Vessel This Week Enhances Eid al-Adha Preparations Amid Rigorous Health Monitoring

Algiers, Algeria | April 26th, 2025 —  In a major step to secure citizens’ needs for Eid al-Adha celebrations, Algeria welcomed the arrival of a vessel carrying 13,000 Spanish sheep early Saturday morning at the Port of Oran. This shipment marks the first arrival of Spanish livestock this season and is part of the government’s intensified efforts to ensure the availability of sacrificial animals at affordable prices.

The ship’s docking was supervised by high-ranking officials, including the Wali (Governor) of Oran, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transport, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, the Director of Agricultural Services of Oran Province, and members of the Provincial Security Committee. Authorities reaffirmed the full mobilization of resources and logistics to guarantee the proper reception, transportation, and health safety of the livestock.

This arrival follows the docking earlier this week of three other vessels at Algiers Port, which delivered thousands of sheep from Romania. In line with the national import program, all imported animals undergo strict veterinary inspections to ensure they meet Algeria’s health and safety standards. Before being distributed to quarantine zones, each sheep will be subject to comprehensive health examinations by specialized veterinary inspectors.

In parallel, “Echorouk” sources reported that another significant shipment of sacrificial animals reached the Port of Djen Djen in Jijel on Saturday morning. The vessel, named “Pacific M,” carried over 10,500 rams imported from the Port of Midia on the Black Sea, Romania.

The Ministry of Agriculture emphasized in an official statement the critical importance of health controls, noting that these measures are designed not only to protect consumers but also to ensure the overall success of Eid festivities across the country.

The steady influx of livestock from Spain and Romania comes in response to directives aimed at stabilizing market prices and guaranteeing a sufficient supply of sacrificial animals for Algerian families. Authorities continue to coordinate between maritime, agricultural, and veterinary services to manage the operations effectively and uphold the highest standards of safety and quality.
