ALGIERS- Ahmed Badani, Minister of Fisheries and Halieutic Productions, announced on Thursday in Boumerdès the dedication of 109 vessels measuring over 24 meters in length to high seas fishing for the current year, including 34 reserved for bluefin tuna fishing.

Speaking to the press after an inspection visit accompanied by Minister of Transport Mohamed El Habib Zahana, Badani emphasized the importance of encouraging high seas fishing. He mentioned that 11 additional vessels over 35 meters in length are currently under construction for the first time in Algeria, including a 42-meter vessel being constructed in the workshops of Chlef province, describing it as “a significant national achievement.”

In order to promote high seas fishing and increase production by exploring new fishing zones, efforts are underway to import large vessels over 40 meters in length, with dedicated docking spaces to ensure optimal working conditions, Badani added.

Furthermore, Badani affirmed the finalization of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) system for fishermen who have been in the profession for years without formal certification. This initiative, implemented in training institutions, aims to enable them to work with peace of mind.

Regarding the port of Dellys, Badani highlighted cooperation with the Ministry of Transport to develop this infrastructure into a “management model,” involving all stakeholders in the sector. He also emphasized the importance of the training school at the port of Dellys in training fishermen from various provinces.

Minister of Transport Mohamed El Habib Zahana stated that his ministry had proposed a project to build a land station in the municipality of Boudouaou. He also announced the imminent rehabilitation of the railway line between Boumerdès and Algiers due to the large number of passengers, estimated at “around two million people.”

Additionally, Zahana mentioned plans to establish an evaluation platform to enhance the behavior of workers in the passenger transport sector, aiming to improve performance and professionalism.

The ministerial delegation commenced their visit in Boumerdès, where they received presentations on the transportation, fishing, and aquaculture sectors in the province. They inspected the passenger railway station and received updates on its activities.

At the port of Dellys, the delegation inspected the start of construction works for a fishing training school benefiting fishermen from Tizi Ouzou, Bejaia, and Jijel provinces. They also received a briefing on the development of a fishing shelter (El Kous) along the Dellys coastline.

In Zemmouri, the ministers inspected the port, the model docking plan, and the headquarters of the Public Establishment for Urban and Suburban Transport in the municipality of Boudouaou.
