Algiers, Algeria | December 12th, 2024 — During a visit to Bujumbura on Thursday, Algeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, reaffirmed the shared commitment of Algeria and Burundi to deepen and revitalize their bilateral relations. Acting as a special envoy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Minister Attaf underscored the mutual ambition to strengthen collaboration and contribute to Africa’s advancement amid a complex global landscape.
Following his meeting with Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye, Attaf expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage in high-level dialogue despite the President’s commitments to a significant youth, peace, and security event in Burundi. “I am honored by the reception extended to me by President Ndayishimiye, particularly as he presides over an important national event,” Attaf stated, emphasizing the warm rapport between the two nations’ leadership.
A Letter of Strategic Importance
During the meeting, Attaf delivered a letter from President Tebboune to President Ndayishimiye. The letter highlighted Algeria’s intent to elevate bilateral ties and bolster cooperation for Africa’s collective progress. “The message from President Tebboune conveys Algeria’s aspiration to collaborate with Burundi in navigating the current turbulent international environment while prioritizing the advancement of the African continent,” Attaf disclosed.
Shared Political Will and Strategic Measures
Attaf underscored the alignment of political will between the two nations. “There is a shared determination to infuse our bilateral relations with new dynamism and greater substance. We have agreed on concrete measures and timelines to achieve these goals,” he noted.
Economic Cooperation and Investment as Pillars of Growth
Economic collaboration emerged as a central focus of the discussions, with trade and investment identified as priority areas for strengthening ties. “Both nations are committed to becoming not only emerging economies but eventually developed ones,” Attaf highlighted, adding that Algeria stands ready to support Burundi in realizing these common ambitions.
