Algeria Calls for Action to Protect the Most Vulnerable in Gaza and Lebanon

Algiers, Algeria | October 25th, 2024 — Algeria has urged the international community to act decisively to protect vulnerable populations in Gaza and Lebanon. Speaking before the UN Security Council on Thursday, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire to ensure the safety of civilians, particularly women, who are most at risk under international humanitarian law.

“The words fail me to describe the daily atrocities and horror experienced by Palestinians, especially women,” Ambassador Bendjama stated, emphasizing the need for urgent international action. His remarks were part of the Security Council’s public debate titled “Women, Peace, and Security.”

Enhanced Protection for Women

Ambassador Bendjama highlighted the severe impact of armed conflicts on women and children, stressing the need for enhanced protections. “In Gaza, the [Zionist] aggression has inflicted unspeakable suffering on women, accompanied by blatant violations of their rights as both women and human beings,” he deplored, noting that out of the estimated 42,000 Palestinian casualties in Gaza, over 14,000 are children, and more than 10,000 are women.

To ensure more effective protection for women in conflict zones, Bendjama advocated for stronger accountability and punitive measures against those violating humanitarian law and women’s rights. He stressed the importance of empowering women to play active roles in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

Promoting Gender Equality Policies

Bendjama further called for a collaborative approach involving the United Nations, regional organizations, and civil society to bolster the role of women in peace and security through partnerships and cooperation. He also emphasized the importance of promoting gender equality policies and developing national programs that empower and protect women, especially in the digital age and amidst armed conflicts.

Highlighting Algeria’s commitment, Ambassador Bendjama pointed to ongoing efforts to elevate the role of women and support women peacebuilders at both regional and international levels.
