ALGIERS- In its first statement as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, warned against the emergence of a regional conflict in the Red Sea with uncontrollable consequences. The diplomat urged stakeholders to avoid taking measures that could escalate tensions in Yemen and undermine the significant efforts led by the UN Special Envoy in the region.

Bendjama stressed the current regional context is marked by risks of escalation, emphasizing the need to prevent the emergence of a regional conflict with unpredictable consequences. He also called for refraining from measures that could worsen tensions in Yemen and disrupt the considerable efforts of the UN Special Envoy, who has garnered support from local and regional parties.

Highlighting Algeria’s commitment to maintaining international peace and security, Bendjama declared that coastal states bear primary responsibility for maritime security in the Red Sea. He cautioned that any collective effort lacking active participation from these states is destined to fail.

Bendjama underscored the major consequences of developments in the Red Sea on the economic and maritime security of the region. He noted that the Red Sea serves as a crucial corridor for global trade, accounting for about 15% of global maritime activities and safeguarding navigation in the region.

Furthermore, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN addressed the establishment of the Gulf and African States Council on the coast of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. He viewed it as a framework serving security and economic interests in this strategic maritime region, calling for addressing the root causes of impediments to maritime freedom for a comprehensive solution.
