ALGIERS- In a bid to strengthen economic ties between Algeria and China, Minister of Housing, Urbanism, and City, Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, extended an invitation to Chinese enterprises to intensify their investments in Algeria. Speaking at the 8th session of the Algerian-Chinese Joint Commission for Economic, Commercial, and Technical Cooperation in Beijing, Minister Belaribi highlighted the need for a joint business forum to explore partnership opportunities.
Acknowledging China’s significant contribution to infrastructure projects in Algeria, such as the East-West Highway and the Great Mosque of Algiers, Belaribi urged Chinese companies to reinforce and consolidate their direct investments in Algeria. Emphasizing the sectors with potential, he specifically mentioned energy, mining, transportation (air, maritime, and rail), basic infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, water resources, aquaculture, modern technologies, digital services, housing, urban planning, and tourism.
In this context, the minister called for the reactivation of the joint working group to implement the agreement on enhancing production capacities. He proposed establishing a roadmap outlining practical steps for priority projects. Additionally, he stressed the importance of implementing the memorandum of understanding for creating a joint Algerian-Chinese investment and economic cooperation working group, signed in July 2023.
Belaribi suggested organizing an Algerian-Chinese business forum dedicated to investment opportunities in Algeria, facilitating collaboration between major Chinese and Algerian companies. He also highlighted the need to realize the goals outlined in the “2022-2024 Triennial Cooperation Plan in Strategic Areas” through in-depth studies of financing mechanisms and technical aspects.
Addressing trade concerns, the minister called on China to ease access for Algerian products in the Chinese market, emphasizing the importance of activating previously agreed-upon trade agreements. Despite China being Algeria’s top commercial supplier since 2013, Minister Belaribi stressed the need to reduce the trade imbalance by increasing efforts and cooperation.
In an effort to promote Algerian exports, Belaribi proposed establishing a permanent exhibition of Algerian products in China. This mechanism aims to enhance the visibility and market presence of Algerian goods known for their quality.
The discussions took place during the 8th Algerian-Chinese Joint Commission session, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Minister Belaribi’s proposals align with Algeria’s commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and fostering a balanced partnership with China. The session follows President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s state visit to China in July 2023, which resulted in numerous agreements and memorandums of understanding across strategic sectors.
As the economic collaboration between Algeria and China continues to evolve, Minister Belaribi’s initiatives aim to unlock new opportunities, drive investment growth, and further deepen the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
