Algeria Calls for High-Level UN Security Council Meeting on Palestine

Algiers, Algeria | September 20th, 2024 — Algeria has formally called for a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council on September 27, 2024, to discuss the alarming situation in Palestine. This call comes on the heels of a significant address by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, who emphasized the urgent need for decisive actions supported by mechanisms of accountability.
In his earlier remarks during a Security Council meeting focused on the Middle East, Bendjama articulated the necessity of implementing measures that would impose peace on those who reject it. “Today, we urgently require decisions backed by rigorous oversight and accountability mechanisms. Algeria firmly believes that peace must be enforced upon those who deny its importance,” he stated, highlighting the critical nature of the current geopolitical landscape.
The ambassador stressed that the primary mission of the Security Council is to safeguard international peace and security, underscoring the urgent need for collective action in light of the deteriorating conditions in the region. “The severity of the situation in the Middle East demands swift and decisive actions. Everyone present must comprehend that the region is on the brink of disaster,” Bendjama warned. He further cautioned against ignoring historical lessons that could prevent a total regional war.
Denouncing Impunity and Calling for Palestinian Statehood
Bendjama also expressed profound indignation over the impunity enjoyed by the Zionist occupiers, citing their ongoing disengagement from previous agreements and repeated violations of international law. He emphasized, “If we genuinely wish to shield future generations from the ravages of war, as we have committed to in the UN Charter, the solution is unequivocal: there can be no peace in the Middle East without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.”
The call for a high-level meeting on Palestine comes just 48 hours after Algeria convened an emergency Security Council session to address the grave developments in Lebanon, particularly the recent large-scale cyberattacks by Zionist forces. These crimes resulted in the tragic loss of at least 37 lives and injuries to nearly 3,000 individuals in Lebanon, while the ongoing violence in Palestine has led to a staggering toll of over 41,272 martyrs and 95,551 injured.
