Algiers, Algeria | September 23rd, 2024 — In a stirring and forceful address delivered at the United Nations headquarters, Algeria’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, made an urgent appeal to the international community to restore the fractured trust between the United Nations and oppressed peoples worldwide, particularly those suffering under colonization and brutal repression.

Representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the “Summit of the Future,” Attaf emphasized the critical need for multilateralism to be reinvigorated in order to serve the interests of peace, security, and justice. His speech underscored Algeria’s unwavering stance on advocating for the rights of marginalized nations and called for an immediate halt to the ongoing Zionist genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Delivering his speech at the 10th interactive dialogue titled “Enhancing Multilateralism for International Peace and Security,” Attaf implored the United Nations to reaffirm its founding principles and serve as the last bastion of justice for oppressed populations. He highlighted the deep disillusionment among colonized and subjugated peoples, who had once viewed the UN as a beacon of hope but now question its effectiveness and impartiality in addressing global injustices.

“The confidence between the United Nations and the peoples who look to it for justice has been shattered. It is imperative that we work to restore this faith, especially for those who have been victims of colonization and repression,” Attaf declared passionately. “For these peoples, the United Nations was once their final refuge against tyranny and injustice, a protector of their rights, and a guarantor of fairness in the darkest moments of their history.”

Attaf’s speech, delivered amid the high-stakes discussions at the summit, brought a sharp focus to the crises that continue to test the efficacy of multilateralism. He pointed to the numerous global conflicts and disputes brought before the United Nations, lamenting that these cases have often resulted in deadlock, exacerbating the frustrations of those most affected by violence and oppression. His critique of the international system was pointed, reflecting a broader disillusionment with the UN’s handling of critical issues.

“We find ourselves in an unprecedented situation,” Attaf noted, “where the very institution designed to safeguard international peace and security is struggling to meet its fundamental obligations. We have witnessed countless crises, conflicts, and appeals for justice brought before this body, only to see them met with inaction or ineffective resolutions.”

Central to Attaf’s address was the ongoing genocidal war in Palestine, which he framed as the most glaring example of the UN’s failure to protect those in need. His description of the Zionist military’s actions in Gaza as a “genocidal war” conveyed the severity of the situation and Algeria’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause. Attaf emphasized that for nearly a year, the people of Gaza have faced unparalleled devastation and suffering at the hands of the Zionist occupation, while the international community has largely remained passive.

“One of the gravest challenges confronting the international community today is the need to halt the Zionist entity’s colonial occupation and the genocidal war it continues to wage against the Palestinian people in Gaza. For nearly a year, Gaza has been subjected to unimaginable destruction and suffering, and yet, despite the scale of these atrocities, the world stands by, unwilling or unable to act,” Attaf remarked with evident frustration.

He further condemned the broader escalation of violence in the Middle East, attributing much of the instability to unchecked Zionist aggression. The Algerian minister’s critique was not limited to the Palestinian issue; he called for a comprehensive and urgent international response to the escalating conflicts that threaten regional and global peace.

Attaf’s speech conveyed Algeria’s deep-rooted commitment to multilateralism, but he stressed that this commitment must be reciprocated by tangible actions from the United Nations. The “Summit of the Future,” he argued, represents a critical opportunity for the UN to reclaim its role as the preeminent mediator in global conflicts and to reaffirm its dedication to the principles of international law.

“At this crucial juncture, the expectations for this summit could not be higher. The world is looking to us to restore the United Nations to its rightful position as the central force in preventing and resolving global conflicts. It is imperative that all signatories of the UN Charter renew their commitments to its principles and show their willingness to respect international law,” Attaf insisted.

Algeria’s position, as articulated by Attaf, drew on its historical legacy as a champion of decolonization and human rights. The minister’s speech evoked the country’s own long struggle for independence from colonial rule and its deep-seated belief in the principles of justice, equality, and self-determination. Through this lens, Attaf presented Algeria as a moral leader on the global stage, committed to upholding the rights of all oppressed peoples.

In his concluding remarks, Attaf reiterated Algeria’s unwavering solidarity with Palestine and called on the international community to demonstrate the political will necessary to address the root causes of global instability. His speech was a direct appeal to world leaders to act decisively, warning that the failure to do so would only lead to further chaos and suffering for generations to come.
