Algeria, Cameroon Pledge to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria | January 07th, 2024 — Algeria and Cameroon have reaffirmed their determination to bolster bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, as emphasized by Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf during his official visit to Yaoundé on Tuesday.

Minister Attaf had the distinguished honor of delivering a letter from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to his Cameroonian counterpart, President Paul Biya. The letter, received on behalf of President Biya by the Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Cameroonian Presidency, underscored Algeria’s commitment to deepening relations with Cameroon.

Enhancing Economic Connectivity

Minister Attaf highlighted that the letter primarily addressed strategies for consolidating bilateral ties, emphasizing the need for a renewed dynamic and greater substance in the relationship. He stated, “Our bilateral relations require fresh momentum and enhanced depth. The recent visit of my brother, the Cameroonian Foreign Minister, to Algiers and my visit to Yaoundé today aim precisely to revitalize our cooperation in all dimensions, under the guidance of our two Heads of State.”

The renewed cooperation framework involves the modernization of both the legal and institutional frameworks governing bilateral relations, with clearly defined priorities for pragmatic and ambitious collaboration. Minister Attaf further stressed the importance of facilitating direct connections between economic operators from both nations to foster stronger commercial partnerships.

Educational and Sectoral Collaboration

Highlighting educational ties, Minister Attaf expressed pride in the academic exchange between the two countries, noting, “Algeria takes great pride in having welcomed and graduated 1,000 young women and 1,000 young men from Cameroon in its universities.”

He also pointed out significant progress in transport cooperation, noting the successful establishment of an air link and the ongoing discussions to extend it with a maritime route. Furthermore, agribusiness, higher education, and professional training were identified as priority sectors for expanded collaboration.

Shared Commitment to African Solidarity

Minister Attaf emphasized the shared dedication of Algeria and Cameroon to defending African causes on the global stage. “There are critical challenges and objectives that require our unwavering support for African causes. Cameroonians and Algerians have consistently been at the forefront of defending the continent’s interests. In today’s complex global landscape, these causes are multiplying and becoming more pressing, demanding our utmost vigilance, engagement, and boundless energy,” he declared.

The strengthened cooperation between Algeria and Cameroon stands as a testament to their mutual commitment to fostering regional solidarity, economic advancement, and cultural exchange, ensuring a more resilient and united Africa.
