Algiers, Algeria | June 12th, 2024 —  The Canadian Ambassador to Algeria, Michael Callan, revealed today that Canada issued a total of 47,700 visas to Algerians in 2023, showcasing the breadth of interactions between the two nations. These visas included 35,000 tourist visas, 9,000 study visas, 3,000 work visas, and 700 residency visas.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 55th edition of the Algiers International Fair (FIA), Ambassador Callan underscored the significant role of the Algerian community in Canada, which numbers approximately 130,000 individuals. He highlighted their contributions to enhancing cultural ties and advancing mutual interests between Algiers and Ottawa.

Ambassador Callan reaffirmed the commitment of Algerian expatriates to their homeland, expressing their enthusiasm for contributing to Algeria’s development and progress.

Responding to the growing demand for travel between Algeria and Canada, Ambassador Callan acknowledged the potential for increasing the current two direct flights per week. He mentioned ongoing negotiations between both countries’ authorities, particularly in the aviation sector, as pivotal to expanding air travel options.

Economically, Algeria and Canada have maintained a robust relationship, with bilateral trade surpassing 1.5 billion Canadian dollars in 2023 (approximately 150 billion Algerian dinars). Ambassador Callan expressed optimism about further boosting these figures in the upcoming years, noting Algeria’s status as Canada’s largest African customer and fourth-largest bilateral trading partner globally.

Highlighting Canada’s interest in investing in Algeria, particularly following recent regulatory reforms like the Investment Law, Ambassador Callan urged seizing collaborative opportunities to realize mutually beneficial projects. Currently, over 100 Canadian companies are actively operating in Algeria, underscoring the strong economic links between the two nations.

In line with enhancing economic cooperation, Ambassador Callan announced the participation of twenty Canadian companies in the upcoming FIA. These companies will be grouped within a dedicated pavilion aimed at bolstering their presence in the Algerian market.

Furthermore, Canadian authorities are preparing to host a delegation of Algerian business leaders in early July, organized by the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA). This initiative underscores Canada’s commitment to fostering a robust and mutually beneficial partnership with Algeria.

As both countries commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, Ambassador Callan emphasized Canada’s intention to broaden cooperation across various sectors, including regional security, trade, investment, human rights, cultural exchange, scientific collaboration, and climate change initiatives.
