ALGIERS- In a recent announcement, the Minister of Fisheries and Fisheries Production, Mr. Ahmed Badani, revealed that Algeria has successfully caught 50% of its bluefin tuna fishing quota for the year. The declaration came during a meeting held in Algiers to evaluate the sector’s performance during the first half of 2023.
“Algeria has already surpassed the halfway mark by catching over 1011 tonnes of bluefin tuna, accounting for 50% of the quota assigned by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT),” stated Mr. Badani.
This accomplishment reflects Algeria’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices and adherence to international conservation agreements. The ICCAT sets fishing quotas to prevent overfishing and ensure the long-term viability of bluefin tuna populations in the Atlantic.
The Minister also announced plans to organize a national conference on investment in the fisheries sector in July. The conference aims to attract more investment to the industry and enhance working conditions for fishing professionals. Representatives from various ministerial departments will participate, emphasizing the government’s commitment to foster collaboration and create a conducive environment for growth and development in the fisheries sector.
The upcoming conference presents a unique opportunity for stakeholders to come together and explore ways to bolster the industry further. Investment in the fisheries sector can yield multiple benefits, including the expansion of fishing fleets, the improvement of infrastructure and equipment, and the implementation of sustainable practices.
