Algiers, Algeria | September 14th, 2024 — On Sunday, September 15, Algeria will observe National Imam Day, an occasion established by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to honor the crucial role of imams in shaping Algerian society and upholding Islamic values. This year’s celebration, themed “The Imam: From the Liberation War to Nation Building,” holds special resonance as it aligns with the eve of Mawlid Ennabaoui Echarif, marking the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.
National Imam Day, inaugurated in 2021, is dedicated to acknowledging the significant contributions of imams and scholars throughout Algeria’s history. The day is a tribute to their efforts in educating the public, imparting Islamic principles, and preserving the nation’s religious and cultural heritage through a balanced and moderate approach.
Imams are pivotal in countering extremism and radicalization, while also fostering social morality, compassion, mutual support, and solidarity. Their influence pervades various aspects of Algerian life, including sermons delivered in mosques, Quranic education, and numerous awareness initiatives.
The Algerian government has demonstrated its commitment to supporting the imam community through several key measures. In February, President Tebboune approved a new compensation system for imams, reflecting an enhancement of their social and spiritual standing.
Additionally, Executive Decree 24-130, issued on April 9, 2024, updates and complements the 2008 decree on religious and waqf administration staff. This decree sets forth detailed criteria for the recruitment, promotion, and responsibilities of imams, including positions such as Imam Mouderrès, Imam Preacher, Imam Professor, and Chief Imam Preacher. These updates aim to ensure that imams are well-supported and can effectively contribute to Algeria’s societal and religious fabric.
The official observance of National Imam Day in Setif will feature a national conference highlighting the imams’ contributions to Algeria’s liberation war. This event will underscore the enduring significance of their role in both the historical and contemporary context of Algeria.
As Algeria celebrates National Imam Day, the nation reaffirms its commitment to honoring the values and contributions of its imams, recognizing their essential role in fostering national growth and harmony.
