Algiers, Algeria | October 27th, 2024 — On Sunday, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Abdelkrim Aouissi, welcomed Qiao Gang, Vice President of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), at the ministry’s headquarters. This meeting, attended by the Commissioner of Atomic Energy, Abdelhamid Mellah, alongside Algerian and Chinese officials, aimed to assess the current state of cooperation between the two nations in the field of nuclear energy.
The discussions centered on prospects for collaboration between the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) and the CNNC, focusing on various peaceful applications of nuclear energy. Key areas of interest included its potential use in medicine and scientific research, with particular attention paid to nuclear technology’s role in medical diagnostics and radiotherapy.
A significant highlight was the initiative for the production of radiopharmaceuticals at the Nuclear Research Center of Birine (CRNB). This project seeks to enhance Algeria’s capabilities in the fight against cancer by locally producing isotopes used in medical imaging and radiation therapy. This approach aims to reduce Algeria’s dependence on imports and improve patient access to treatments, thereby bolstering the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
The discussions also delved into the progress made by Algerian-Chinese working groups composed of experts from both nations, who are developing a roadmap for advancing nuclear technology in Algeria. This collaboration aims to integrate nuclear applications into the medical sector while addressing Algeria’s specific needs in scientific research and technological development.
Emerging opportunities for broadening cooperation were also highlighted, showcasing areas where Chinese expertise could enhance Algerian capabilities. Proposed initiatives include establishing interdisciplinary working groups to facilitate the transfer of skills in nuclear applications, encompassing nuclear safety, waste management, and environmental protection.
The Nuclear Research Center of Birine (CRNB), a strategic institution in Algeria, plays a pivotal role in the development of nuclear technologies. In addition to its research on reactor physics and technology, the CRNB focuses on isotope production and developing safety measures for nuclear facilities while ensuring effective management of radioactive waste to protect the environment.
Through this enhanced cooperation with China, Algeria aspires to make significant advancements in nuclear technology, strengthening its scientific infrastructure and providing innovative solutions for the medical sector. This partnership reflects Algeria’s commitment to leveraging nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, promoting health and safety while fostering sustainable development.
