ALGIERS- On World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3rd, Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, led a series of commemorative events in Algiers aimed at honoring the contributions of journalists and promoting press freedom.

Honoring the Fallen

Accompanied by Kamel Sidi Saïd, Advisor for Communication at the Presidency of the Republic, and Abderrahmane Hammad, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Laagab commenced the day’s activities at Press Freedom Square in Algiers. There, in a solemn ceremony, he laid a wreath of flowers at the memorial, paying homage to journalists who lost their lives to terrorist groups during the tumultuous period known as the dark decade.

Following the tribute at Press Freedom Square, Minister Laagab inaugurated the new headquarters of the National Organization of Algerian Journalists at the prestigious Tahar Djaout Press House. This symbolic gesture underscored the government’s commitment to supporting and strengthening the nation’s journalistic community.

Remembering Mohamed Salah

From there, the official delegation traveled to Baraki, where they named the conference hall of the Nelson Mandela Stadium after the late sports journalist Mohamed Salah. This gesture honored Salah’s contributions to sports journalism and recognized his lasting impact on Algeria’s media landscape.

Advancements in Broadcasting

In a move highlighting Algeria’s commitment to modernizing its media infrastructure, Minister Laagab oversaw the launch of a new satellite broadcasting station for national television. This technological advancement will enhance the reach and quality of broadcasting across the country.

Tribute to Abdelkader Hammani

Additionally, the press center at the July 5th Stadium was dedicated to the memory of the late journalist and commentator Abdelkader Hammani. This renaming ceremony honored Hammani’s significant contributions to journalism and his unwavering dedication to informing the public.
