Algiers, Algeria | January 18th, 2025 — Algeria, currently presiding over the United Nations Security Council for the month of January, issued a strong condemnation on Friday regarding the deliberate attacks by Zionist occupying forces against the personnel of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Algeria called for the initiation of an impartial investigation to ensure accountability for these violations and to uphold the principle of responsibility.

In a statement delivered by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, during a session on the UNIFIL and United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), he condemned, in the strongest terms, the deliberate targeting of UNIFIL personnel and the willful destruction of its facilities. “We condemn, in the firmest terms, the deliberate attacks by the occupying forces against UNIFIL personnel, as well as the destruction of its premises,” he stated.

Bendjama emphasized the urgent need for impartial investigations, calling for the full application of the principle of accountability in light of these breaches. He also expressed deep concern over the ongoing violations observed in the operational areas of both UNIFIL and UNDOF, which, he stated, represent a grave source of alarm. Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering support for these peace missions and its strong commitment to ensuring the safety and security of peacekeepers. “We reiterate that attacks on peacekeepers constitute war crimes,” he underscored.

Furthermore, Bendjama recalled that last month, the Security Council had adopted Resolution 2766, renewing the mandate of UNDOF, and urged for the full implementation of this resolution. He stressed Algeria’s approval and support for the key provisions of the resolution, particularly the obligation to adhere to the terms of the 1974 disengagement agreement, exercise maximum restraint, prevent ceasefire violations in the separation zone, and ensure no military activity in that area.

On the broader regional issues, Bendjama raised alarms over the Zionist actions in the separation zone and its repeated incursions into Syrian territory, which he described as a severe threat not only to Syria, currently navigating a delicate period, but also to regional and international peace and security. He called upon the Security Council to reaffirm its resolutions and take decisive action to end these provocations, stating, “No one is above the law, and the principle of accountability must be enforced.”

Bendjama further argued that addressing the root causes of the ongoing conflict in the region by ending the occupation of all Arab lands is essential for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. “The current cycle of violence once again underscores an undeniable truth: we cannot resolve the region’s problems through piecemeal solutions,” he stated. He stressed that the challenges in the region are interconnected and that only a holistic approach could lead to genuine and lasting peace.

In this context, Bendjama commended the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, expressing hope that it would put an end to the devastating bloodshed in the Palestinian enclave. “This development is, of course, welcome. However, this cannot and must not be our ultimate goal,” he warned. He emphasized that the ceasefire should serve as a stepping stone toward a just and lasting solution, preparing the ground for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with El Quds as its capital.

Finally, Bendjama urged members of the Security Council to mobilize their efforts to facilitate the emergence of a fair and enduring solution that would bring peace and justice to the Middle East. Algeria continues to advocate for a unified international stance on the region’s issues, emphasizing the need for collective action to restore stability and uphold the rights of all peoples in the region.
